Apple Pie dragged the last box down from the barn's attic and dropped it carefully on top of the others. She wiped the sweat from her brow looked around, letting out a low whistle as she did so.
"Why do we have so much stuff?" she muttered to herself. "Hey, Granny, that's the last of 'em!"
"Eh?" Granny Smith looked up from the book she was buried in, tucked away in the corner of the barn out of the way of the boxes. "What's that?"
"That's the last of them!"
"Alright, alright, no need to shout! I ain't deaf, yeh know."
Apple Pie rolled her eyes. "Of course not, Granny." She trotted over to the old mare and sat down next to her. "What you lookin' at?"
"Hmm?" Granny Smith looked up once more from the book.
Apple Pie peered over the top of it; it was an old family photo album. The photos were mostly in sepia, making it hard to tell coat and mane colours, but Apple Pie thought that one mare looked mighty familiar.
"Is that you, Granny?" she asked, pointing.
"Oooh, that's me alright, sugarcube!" Granny's face lit up as she eagerly turned the book to face her great grandaughter. "Wasn't I a catch?"
"I… you certainly were?"
"Yeh know," Granny said, turning the book back to face herself and flipping a few pages until she was looking at a picture closer to the front, "if yeh look at me here…" she picked up one of the more recent albums and flicked it open, "and you here…"
"Huh." Apple Pie was surprised. "Ah looked kinda like you, didn't Ah?"
"Mmm," Granny agreed, nodding and placing the books to one side. "Back when we were both blondes, yeh could have us mistaken for twins!"
"Yeah," Apple Pie looked down at the images, still visible in the open books, and smiling gently. She wondered what her Granny was like when she was a filly. Were they as similar in personality as they were in looks? Would they have been friends? Would —
"'Cept, of course, Ah was prettier."
Apple Pie's musings came to a screeching halt.
"What?"
"Well, lookit you; yeh've got all o' those there freckles and there's mud in yer mane. Yer cute and all, Ah was the belle of the ball."
Apple Pie sighed.
"Thanks, Granny."
Yeah so, as happens with some people, Apple Pie was born blonde and her mane darkened over time. She used to look a lot like her Granny, just more freckly. Even as an early teen, before Pie hit her growth spurt, the resemblance was still strong; they even have similar cutie marks! (if you squint)
Also, I refuse to believe Granny Smith is capable of dying. She probably just stares angrily at the grim reaper until he gets scared, goes home, and decides to put off reaping her soul for a few more years.
Hope you all liked this little doodle thing!
