Ask Movie Slate — Episode 228 — Dredd and Judge Dredd

Today's Movie Slate is brought to you thanks to :iconfernindt:

Believe it or not, I don't have anything against featuring the Princesses of MLP in my ask blog. I just never have the chance to do so, nor do I come up with ideas that could justify featuring them in these updates. I also have the concern that featuring Cadence, Celestia, Luna, Twilight or even Flurry Heart, would lead to people thinking I'm either abusing their popularity for a boost or to think I'm implying that them and Movie Slate are friends. I've always thought that the Princesses, being who they are, have the right to go anywhere at anytime they want. So having them in the booth doesn't imply friendship of any kind.

Specially when they appear dressed up like this.

So! Let's go one by one. "Judge Dredd" is such a product of its time it's impossible for me not to love it as a guilty pleasure. The spandex of the costumes; the flashy and crappy CGI; the over-the-top villain with the even more over-the-top hero; the thumping soundtrack; and a complete disregard for the source material. This movie is not a Judge Dredd movie. It may look like it (sometimes) but it has none of the spirit from the comics. It might as well be titled "Joe Muscles in the Post-Apocalypse". For years I've scoffed at having Stallone showing his face instead of keeping it hidden behind the helmet, but it's small details like that which show how little film-makers cared for adapting comic books in the 90's. It's like having the Doom guy stop in the middle of a level to quote an entire chapter of "War and Peace", it doesn't add anything and takes away a big aspect of the original character.

And speaking of Doom guy, let's talk about "Dredd", the Karl Urban version. You know, one of the absolute best action movies ever made in the past twenty years. People talk about a renaissance of horror movies, but between this one, "Mad Max: Fury Road" and both "Raid" movies I'd say action movies aren't too far behind. "Dredd" isn't just a great action movie, it's also a great Movie movie. You know, a Movie that knows how to movie. Almost everything is told with visuals or a clever combination of visuals and narration. The characters are well built and the actors portraying them are fantastic. Everyone and myself love Karl Urban as Dredd from the very first moment he puts on that helmet, but Lena Heady's Momma isn't far behind, and Olive Thirlby's Anderson is both interesting, sympathetic and quite a badass. This movie reminded me of the '70s, in particular of how John Carpenter was making movies during the 70's. I'd consider this movie an spiritual successor to "Assault on Precinct 13", with a cop (or cops) surrounded by enemies, with limited resources, trying their best to stay alive. Nobody is invincible in this movie and I loved the dynamic between Dredd and Anderson.

Alright, so you can tell I really liked the movie. Is there anything I didn't like? Truth be told, I can't think of anything. I would mention the length, but it's only like an hour and a half long which is just perfect. It's straight forward and simple. It has style, good world building, good characters, and leaves a good after taste.

"Dredd" is a great, solid action movie that has enough strengths to stand on its own and offers such a good spectacle that even those who aren't familiar with the comics should be able to enjoy it. If you've been yearning for a good, fun, self-contained action movie that packs enough punch to stop a train, then check it out!

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
