I’m not sure how much of a new story I could make up about a pony version of the princess Rapunzel. I think most of us know the drill — pretty girl with the long golden hair locked away in a tower by a witch until a young man comes visiting.

Well, actually I think most of us need a little refresher course.

A long, long time ago, Rapunzel’s mother had powerful cravings for rapunzel/corn salad (seriously, that’s the name) while pregnant. There was rapunzel in the garden next door, which belonged to an enchantress by the name of Dame Gothel. The cravings were so strong that her husband broke into the garden at night and stole rapunzel right from the garden, but was confronted by Gothel. He was offered the rapunzel on the condition that the child would be surrendered to the enchantress on birth and, like all ‘good’ fairytale parents, he accepted the offer.

Gothel named the little girl Rapunzel and raised her on her own, eventually bringing her to the tower in the forest and locking her away. Gothel’s visits were prefaced with “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, so that I may climb the golden stair”, at which Rapunzel would throw the long hair down and Gothel would climb it.

One day, a prince came across the tower, hearing Rapunzel’s voice. He found he was unable to enter the tower, but visited to hear, and saw Gothel calling her hair down. Now more informed, he called for her, climbed into the tower, and struck up a relationship. The two of them planned an escape (Rapunzel couldn’t climb down her own hair) — he would bring silk, and she would weave a proper ladder for the two of them to climb down.

During the long production time, however, Rapunzel accidentally gave a hint of the prince’s existence to Gothel. Angrily, the enchantress cut her hair, banished Rapunzel to the woods and used it to lure the prince into a trap, where he became blinded by thorns surrounding the tower base. The prince wandered the country, navigating by sound alone, until he heard Rapunzel’s familiar voice. The two of them reunited, and Rapunzel’s tears magically healed his eyes, allowing him to see once more.

Educational, aren’t I?
