Silverwind sets the book on the table, carefully pushing it to the filly. In the dark cabin, the book looks rather bland. It's somewhat small; leather bound (which is rare in Equestria) and cased with a brass lock. Silverwind lights up the lantern with his horn, his tone changing to a somber one as he inspects the book one last time.
"Clover, this is an important task I'm giving on you. This book… it's dangerous. Don't let its looks fool you. That lock on there works more like a clasp than anything. With just a bit of force, that book can pop open… if it does, little more than a glance at its pages can kill you."
He sighs, frowning.
"This isn't something I should trust to a filly. Which is why you're going to Vee. She's going to do most of the work, all you have to do is carry the book and keep it away from anyone suicidal enough to pry it open. Her Informant came to me earlier-
The crow?
"Yes, the Crow. I filled him in on the situation, and he assured me that Vee will have someone… well, something waiting at port to escort you. Probably. I think. Just be on the lookout for anything trying to get your attention… don't trust any stallions and you should be fine. Now, place your hoof on the book."
Clover slides her hoof forward, and as she does the light in the lantern flickers out, the already silent room growing eerily quiet.
She pulls away out of reflex, the darkness surrounding the book tangible.
"I know it's scary. Here, how about we change the topic for a bit, and settle your nerves. Any holes you'd like filled in?
With a gulp, Clover nods. How long will you be staying in Town? Maybe she can help unload the ship… will she able to stay in touch, and see the crew again? She's going to be lonely…
"Only as long as necessary to unload, turn some cargo over to my fence, and stock up. We'll be taking a river inland to pick up a shipment, and by then the heat would have died down enough to land in Vanhoover again. And no; you have more important things to do than move boxes. Vee will be able to help you stay in contact with us. And don't worry, tiny-pony! You'll have plenty of company. Vee, her apprentice, her Crow… a gaggle of goodies, eh?"
He gives a small chuckle, the mood lightening considerably. But Silverwind's hoof is still on the book… she reaches forward, and the darkness returns.
Will Clover accept this quest? A chance at adventure, at life, and to see the world? To fight evil wherever it may lie?
Or chicken out, and lose Silverwind's respect?
"I believe in you."
