The Lord of the Night and the mage who cast the Curse of Eternal Night, Nightmare Moon is the evil alter ego of Princess Luna. She manifest herself as Luna’s own darkness overtook her. When the kingdoms had split, that's when the darkness began to fester within her. It was subtle at first, a few thoughts to overthrow her sister here, a few about killing those who annoyed her, but non really went anywhere so Luna attributed them to exhaustion. Eventually they were all the thoughts she was having , and she began to lose control of her own sanity. Of course this was over quite the amount of time so no pony could pay it mind except historians or families with ties to her through generations. However, by the time the pieces were put together, it was too late.

Nightmare Moon’s unsuccessful raid on the Solar Lands led her to banishment on the moon. She was left there gravely injured, but not fatally so. A final mercy Celestia left her, she concluded. Her powers were more drained than she had ever experienced. Centuries passed as she stared back at the lands she once governed. She hoped that they still looked up to the moonlit sky for her guidance, or wondered if she had already been forgotten. It took 200 years for Luna to resurface consciously. It felt like she was watching someone else do those heinous acts and instigated wars through a window. She knew it was her, but all that was left for her and her darkness’ ambition was the bitter loneliness. Her thoughts would come and go in cycles of self reflection, and vengeance. Her light and darkness were at ends with each other. As her millennium long banishment came to a close, her dark thoughts once again took over as Luna was falling deep into her own anxieties. She didn’t want to fight anymore. She just wanted to see her sister's smile again. Luna was once again no longer in control over herself. A prison in her own body. Celestia would surmise that this pain of imprisonment is what caused the Warriors of Darkness to awaken. They needed to help Luna as much as the Warriors of Light needed to protect Celestia when Nightmare Moon returned.

NIghtmare can summon beings to this world, but the caveat is, unlike a summoner, Necromancers like her must use beings that have passed from the mortal coil. She used deceased members of her air brigades to slow down the newly formed Warriors as she set up in the castle deep in the Everfree. This castle used to be the stomping grounds of the two sisters when they were younger, before they were accepted as deities. She used classic trickery and whatever she could summon to buy her time as she recuperated from cursing the entire world. After all the distractions that she plagued her adversaries with, only the lone purple Unicorn made it. Nightmare’s skill with her whip was more than enough to fend off the Blue Mage, but she could already hear the clamoring footsteps of her allies before she regained enough magic to be a grave threat. With all six of them united, the were an unbeatable force, but Nightmare had nearly used up all the energy in her reserves to vanquish her foes. More so than that, she was not expecting the Warriors of Light and Darkness to unleash a new Magick altogether. The magick was so strong that it overwhelmed Nightmare Moon’s defenses and engulfed her. What was left was a drained Luna. Weakened but free.

Unfortunately, this would not be the last the six would see of Nightmare Moon. She may not be living inside of Luna’s Darkness, but another Nightmare exists in another time, and spacetime tampering can have devastating, unforeseen effects

Black Whip — When commanding reanimated corpses ranging from as complex creatures as Pegasi to something as simple as dead trees, it's best to use the basics. The whip is very even in weight and is often the choice of amateur and professionals alike! Adding her powerful magicks only made the whip seem more like another tentacle-like limb.

Necrogarb — Clad with the skulls of a mythical species, the dress can strike fear and awe from friend and foe alike. After returning from the moon, she modeled her clothes after some that struck her fancy after quickly seeing what her Country’s fashions were like.
