I've been studying a lot of both equine and human anatomy the past few days. This diagram represents the culmination of this effort, with the goal of furthering realism in my subsequent drawings.
Ironically, I ended up ignoring most equine muscle structures because they don't allow for the range of motion demonstrated by ponies in the show. Instead, I elected to develop my own entirely unique biology, complete with prehensile forehooves; a feature which you'll notice in all ponies I draw from here own out (but boy, do they look weird.)
The annotations on the diagram provide further information on the departures from equine physiology.
I don't whether to tag this as 'anatomically correct' or 'anatomically incorrect'. I mean, it's not true to equine physiology, but it is a realistic anatomical diagram, so…
