When Sage Leaf and Gingersnap were very young they would often go pick flowers for their mum Fluttershy (seeing as she fell ill)
They really bonded over this and it seemed like the two were inseparable
Then…they grew up.
I don't think Fluttershy perishes from her illness…I don't think that seems right. But she does suffer for a good 4-5 years before Twilight and Discord find the cure (yes I will elaborate some day :) )
