Galaxy Guard lay on her bed, contemplating. Her mind was numb from the nightmares reliving her father’s death, and she felt nothing but clouds over her head suffocating her. But that was normal for the princess. Just thinking about that..that killer…made her clench her teeth. She felt tears brimming her eyes, but refused to let them fall. She had cried enough in the past few weeks.
There was a knock on her door. “Gal? It’s Mom. Can I come in?”
“Yeah.” Galaxy wiped her eyes. The door opened and Galaxy cringed to see her mother’s girlfriend shyly standing behind Princess Twilight. “Hi, honey,” Cheerilee smiled weakly.
“You didn’t tell me she was coming in…” Galaxy muttered, flipping over in bed to face her wall.
“Galaxy, honey, there’s something we want to talk to you about,” Twilight sat down on her bed and lightly stroked her back. “Cheerilee and I are engaged. We’re getting married, and we’re wondering if you’d like to be my best mare.”
The pegasus sat up and burst out laughing. "Ha! Good joke, Mom!" She felt a beam of pride when she caught a glance of Cheerilee's head hanging.
But her mother glared at her. "You're not joking," Galaxy muttered.
“No, Galaxy. Don’t be rude!” Twilight shot her a look before her expression softened. “I know it’s been a lot to take in lately, but Cheerilee and I love each other,” She held her fiancée’s hoof, “and we want you to be part of it.”
“Be part of what? Betraying my father? Betraying your husband? Abandoning everything we’ve built as a family for a petty little school teacher?” Galaxy spat, slamming her hoof against the wall.
Twilight glanced at Cheerilee, who nodded and left the room so they could have a moment alone.
“Galaxy, I didn’t betray your father. I miss him too, but we all have to move on eventually. He would want us, want you, to be happy again. I know Dusk and I do. And if you give Cheerilee a chance, you’ll love her! Won’t you at least try?”
“Never!” Galaxy hissed, her wings flaring up. “You think I’d actually want to participate in the marriage that leaves my father as nothing but ashes in a vase? I will never let his memory die, even if you do! What kind of wife are you that is so ignorant to just forget about the husband that was so cruelly murdered to satisfy your own wants? A damn selfish one!” There was no holding back the tears already streaming down the pegasus’ face. “If you wanted me to be happy, you wouldn’t just desert my father after so little time! You’ve barely mourned at all! You have no idea what it was like, watching him die, murdered by your own best friend!” Galaxy was standing up at this point, nose to nose with her mother as she screamed. “You have no right to replace him! None!” She slammed her hoof on the ground before lifting it and pointing at the door. “That mare will never be my mother!”
Twilight pushed her daughter backward. "I understand you're angry. But I promise this will be for the greater good of both our families-"
"No! Never!"
"Galaxy Guard! This is ridiculous! If you refuse to be our best mare, you must at least attend! It's the least you can do."
"That's not fair! I don't have to do what you say! I'm almost a grown mare!"
"Enough! I am still your mother, and as long as you live under my roof, you follow my orders! You will attend the wedding of myself and Cheerilee, Galaxy, and that is final!" Twilight whipped around, stormed out of her daughter's room and slammed the door.
Galaxy flopped onto her bed and let out a shriek of pure anguish and hatred into her pillow. The walls of the castle practically shook with her scream, and the family inside was just an inch from crumbling apart.
