Second-born daughter of King Helios and Queen Selene, younger sister to Princess Celestia, and ruler of the night. She was raised in the Everfree castle with her sister, largely cut off from mortal ponies and their society for most of her childhood. As her sister earned her mark and grew older, Luna was then taken under the wing of their Queen Selene to be taught how to one day rule Equestria. She earned her mark on one of the spires of the family's castle, watching the moon rise with her mother's magic, and accidentally raising it part of the way with her own.


Following the ascention of Celestia, Luna was trained for a while longer until, to the surprise of both their children and their citizens, the King and Queen left Equestria. It was now to be ruled by Celestia. Not wanting to leave her sister behind, Tia made Luna her co-ruler, but this soon lead to a large imbalance in popularity. Being a co-ruler at a young age put a strain on Luna, but she did not want to leave her sister as a lone ruler when she too was trying to figure out how to rule the large country. Every event or meeting she went too, ponies seemed to value Celestia's opinions and comments more. Luna was slowly pushed to the side, eventually fighting with her sister about being more of a useless figurehead than an actual ruler.

Luna's frustration and grief culminated in the creation of Nightmare Moon, making her cold, cruel, and calculating. For months she secretly gathered an army of supporters from the bat ponies, a race created by her mother. Determined to take power from her sister, she refused to lower the moon, signaling her final tranformation.

After her failed attempt of barganing with her sister, Celestia brought out the big guns: The Elements of Harmony. But the Elements need more than one bearer at a time, as finding a pony that embodies all 6 traits is impossible. Thus, Luna/Nightmare was banished to the moon for 1000 years, and the Elements themselves became inactive.


Years later, after a certain six-pony group, some long talks with Celestia, several failed attempts at socializing in the modern day and tons of therapy, Luna is almost back to her former self. She has power over the realm of dreams, and works primarily at night, making her nocturnal.


Princess Luna has powerful magic tied to the moon, and because of this can do minor shape-shifting magic. While she often has bat-like wings and ears, she will usually transform herself into a more pony-like form for meetings and events. She is currently single but has a son, Northern Star, whom she loves very much.
