Since I just debuted Freyr Fell yesterday, I thought I would do a double headcanon today to show you Rockhoof, Daring Do, and how their relationship formed!
Daring Do
-A.K. Yearling, after completing a proper education, moved out of her parent’s home in hopes of becoming a famous author. Her cutie mark came to her very early in life and she believed it to be focused on fictional writing and creating stories. Her family supported her need to be independent and sent various care packages and letters (with many xoxo’s from her mother) while A.K. lived in a cramped studio flat in Vanhoover, desperately trying to get her short stories published.
-It seemed to take years before A.K. started to lose hope that her dream would never come true. The publicists she spoke too told her that her characters weren’t real enough and couldn’t be related to, and the stakes were too high without phasing the protagonist one bit. They suggested that she think of the stories situation from her perspective and try and do what her hero would do. So that’s exactly what she did.
-Daring Do was born the moment A.K. decided to take the publicists suggestion to a whole new level. She hopped on a train and traveled to White Tail Woods, which led directly into the Undiscovered West of Equestria, with nothing but a saddlebag full of supplies and a notepad. A.K. spent two weeks in some portion of the Undiscovered West, surviving with nothing but her quick wit and knowledge of camping from when she was a child. During these two weeks, she dealt with traversing over steep cliffs, fighting off wild animals, and exploring through caves. A.K. did anything she could to put herself in danger in an attempt to put herself in Daring Do’s shoes and be an explorer. And to her surprise, she loved it.
-During her last day of exploring the Undiscovered West, A.K. found a collapsed hall that contained a treasure of legend known as the Sapphire Stone. Thinking that she could take it as a souvenir of her first ‘Daring Do’ trip, she swiped it from the dilapidated building and dealt with a handful of booby traps. While she barely made it out without severe injury, A.K. didn’t realize the real danger from taking such a gem. Once she wrote and got her first story published, Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone, she received an anonymous warning note demanding that Daring Do be brought forward with the Sapphire Stone to the ruins it was taken from. Intrigued with the mysterious letter, A.K. returned to the Undiscovered West and attempted to spy on whoever wanted the Sapphire Stone back. This was her first run in with Ahuizotl and because of her lack of experience being Daring Do, had the Sapphire Stone stolen from her.
-A.K. took many classes after meeting Ahuizotl and having her butt handed to her, which focused on physical strength and mixed fighting techniques. Since then, she has improved dramatically and has taken on Ahuizotl more times than she can count. As Daring Do, she has made quite a few enemies but gladly puts herself through it to create more novels for her fans.
Rockhoof
-Rockhoof’s birth name is ‘Skermund’, which means Rockhoof in Old Norse. When he realized that his friends, the other Pillars, struggled to say his name, he told them that they could call him by the Ponish translation. After that, only ponies from his village and those around it called him Skermund. When he was lost in Limbo with the Pillars and the Pony of Shadows, it was rare to see his birth name in any of the textbooks that discussed the history of the Pillars.
-Rockhoof is multilingual and speaks both Old Norse and Ponish. He was raised in a Norse home and knew no other language until he met Starswirl the Bearded. With a simple translation spell, Starswirl began to communicate with Rockhoof and with the help of the other Pillars, taught him Ponish. While the stocky stallion is definitely more brawn than brains, he studied hard and regularly practiced long after the sun had set in an attempt to clearly communicate with his friends.
-Rockhoof will regularly speak in Old Norse when he’s by himself and if he gets frustrated, will swear in Norse to avoid cursing in front of students. It doesn’t take long for some of the students, especially Gallus, to realize what he’s doing and bugs him until he teaches them a bad word or two. Rockhoof always worries that somepony might slip up and tell a teacher who taught them swears, but the few students who know are very careful to not accidentally rat him out.
-It is rumored that Rockhoof’s impressive strength comes as a blessing from the Gods. He can neither approve or deny such things since the story is open to interpretation, but will regularly tell young creatures he meets that his strength was given to him for a purpose. In all reality, Rockhoof simply came from an extremely long line of stronger-than-life Draft horses.
-After becoming the official Keeper of Equestrian Tales, Rockhoof tries his best to acquaint himself with the stories he’s missed while he was imprisoned in Limbo. Twilight and Rainbow Dash love recommending their favorite books to him whenever he’s finished a novel. It didn’t take Rockhoof very long to find his all time favorite series of stories, which is The Daring Do Chronicles. He regularly reads these books to foals in the Ponyville Castle Library during Rainbow Dash’s weekly story time and only occasionally finds himself fangirling in front of a bunch of kids.
And here’s a little peek into their relationship:When Rainbow Dash realizes that Rockhoof might be a bigger fan of Daring Do than she is (if that’s possible), Dash decided to surprise him with a special visitor during a weekly story time. Without anyone knowing, Dash snuck Daring Do into the library and had her hide behind a shelf of books until the right moment. During the middle of Rockhoof reading to those attending, Daring Do jumped out of her hiding spot to surprise the foals listening to the story, but not without surprising the stocky stallion so much that he backed into a wall, causing a mountain of books to topple. The rest of the afternoon was spent with Daring Do signing autographs and Rockhoof desperately trying to work up the nerve to talk to her. When he managed to form a complete sentence, Rockhoof rambled on and on about how he thought she was a strong warrior and a skilled adventurer and how he could be a great ally to her if she ever needed him—-
To Rockhoof’s surprise, Daring Do thought he was charming (if not one of the most frazzled fans she’d ever seen) and once he introduced himself, she is just as excited as him. “You’re Rockhoof? Rockhoof the Pillar?? You aided Starswirl the Bearded in trapping the Pony of Shadows in Limbo! I used to read all about you when I was in school! Please tell me, do you pronounce your name ‘Skarmund’ or ‘Skermund’?”
Rockhoof was completely thrown by her own fangirling in response to his. Daring Do, THE DARING DO, knew who he was? The two continued freaking out over the each other long after story time had finished and Dash gently teased the stallion once Daring had to leave, insisting that Rockhoof had a huge crush on her. He turned pink and for the first time that day, became completely silent. After about half a year and a handful of times seeing Daring Do, Rockhoof was determined to ask if he would be allowed to court her. With many hours of planning under his belt, he made his way to her home (which was a good few hours away by train) with a large bouquet of flowers and a constant terrified expression. When he knocked on the door, he was tempted to drop the flowers and bolt, but Daring Do was quick to answer. Rockhoof stood in her open doorway for what seemed like hours and with a deep breath, he nearly shoved the flowers at her and quickly recited the speech that he had recited the whole train ride there. Daring Do quickly caught on to what he was trying to say and was very flattered, to say the least. The two dated steadily for a few years, where a normal date night involved traveling through a section of unknown forest to find some kind of ancient relic or hidden stone. Rockhoof is quick to defend her and Daring Do is quick to protect him even though they both know that the other can hold their own on an adventure. Rockhoof is more formal than most with his partner and doesn’t do much more than kiss her cheek or hold her hand. Daring Do knows that he’s used to a vastly different dating tradition and lets him show affection at his own pace, but isn’t past tackling him for the occasional heated kiss or two.
