Some consider Azure Night to be a bit rough around the edges, but he is nothing compared to his psychopathic cousin, Mourning Star. Azure and Mourning are both Avae, a warrior race of unicorns, pegasi and earth ponies who swear their lives in servitude to Princess Luna. They grew up together, trained together, but when it came time for them to take their Rite (an exhaustive test intended to awaken the full potential of the Avae), the physical and mental strain of the task drove Mourning insane. She believed that it was her destiny to reclaim their homeland (Equestria) from the Equestrians, and led a band of like-minded Avae to join in her crusade. Naturally, Azure disagreed, and the two have been at odds with each other ever since.

Occasionally, Mourning Star and her company cross paths with The Knights of Harmony, which Mourning hates nearly as much as her cousin. She believes that their mission to instill justice and unity in Equestria comes at odds with her own mission, and seeks to destroy them at any cost. Once they're gone, nothing will stand between Mourning and her destiny…

ps. Mourning's clawed wings and dragon tail are a result of her tapping into her latent Ryuma genes, which have coursed through the blood of all Avae since their ancestor created a union with an ancient dragon. An Avae who taps into the full potential of these genes becomes a true Ryuma, a dragon-horse hybrid with great and terrible power. Should Mourning ever achieve her full potential, all of Equestria will be at her mercy.
