Okay so I literally love this couple with my entire soul so I figured I’d give y’all my headcanon notes for them!

Bon Bon

Bon Bon, who was ambitious even as a filly, wanted to be a superhero. It wasn’t a very uncommon dream for a foal, but it lasted much longer for her. She did her best in school, staying on the honor roll each year and being one of the most competitive ponies in athletics. She seemed to be the whole package to everyone around her, but in all reality, she pushed herself constantly to excel at everything she did.

Once Bon Bon completed school, she immediately enlisted into the Equestrian military. She was pushed to her limits time and time again, but each time managed to gather her courage and keep strong. When her supervisors saw how dedicated and talented she was, they suggested to the higher powers that she become a member of a brand new intelligence agency named the Secret Monster Intelligence League of Equestria, also known as S.M.I.L.E.

Bon Bon, given the name Special Agent Sweetie Drops, was all too happy to join S.M.I.L.E. and absolutely lived for her work. She was out, saving ponies everyday from monsters and magic gone wrong. It was like her dream of being a superhero came true and she never thought of life beyond work.

While many ponies believe Bon Bon’s talent lies in confectionery creation or sweet sales, her cutie mark represents her talent of being able to hide her true nature as an agent. Even though Bon Bon seems to be a sweet and innocent mare on sight, “removing her wrapping” will show that she’s actually a talented special ops pony.

Years after she had become a special ops agent, an incident occured that shook S.M.I.L.E to it’s core. A bugbear and a few other monsters had escaped from their enclosures in Tartarus and nearly killed an entire village of ponies before they could be recaptured. It wasn’t until later, after investigation, that S.M.I.L.E realize a rogue agent was responsible for the outbreak and had planned on destroying the agency from the inside. For the rest of the team’s safety, S.M.I.L.E was forced to disband the group and put it’s members into a witness protection program.

When Bon Bon was relocated and given a new name (her original name being Taffy Treat), she was placed in Ponyville and met her roommate. Lyra Heartstrings was fresh from academy and looking for somepony to live with, and believed finding Bon Bon was just good luck. However, Lyra was specifically picked out as Bon Bon’s roommate because she was so normal. If anyone was looking for the ex-agent mare, they might be expecting her to look by herself or with someone equally as dangerous.

After having to reveal her identity to Lyra, Bon Bon decided that she wanted to get back to her desired career field. Fortunately, because of Princess Twilight’s continuing growth of power and need for her own staff, Bon Bon managed to find a job as head of Twilight’s royal security. She now manages a small task force dedicated to keeping the Princess of Friendship safe.

Lyra Heartstrings

Lyra, unlike her roommate, came from a long line of unicorn musicians and was held to a certain standard. She was expected to spend any of her free time practicing her multiple instruments (including piano, violin, and lyre) and studying music theory rather than spend time with foals her age or go out and play. Lyra would spend hours at a time improving her musical skill, with the only other thing of importance in her life being academics.

Because of her family’s ever-rising expectation for her, Lyra was known to be timid and anti-social. Any ponies she met were through playing in the community orchestra in Canterlot or friends of her family, all who expected her to go far because of her natural talent. Her connections and networking did indeed get her far as a musician, but she felt a disconnect to her own skills. Lyra had never had time to explore her interests or find a hobby that wasn’t connected to music.

When she was old enough, her parents immediately enrolled her in a well-known unicorn arts academy in Canterlot. She would be farther away from her family and felt able to breathe for the first time. Lyra’s parents wrote to her, always wanting to know how were classes were and how she was improving. But in her spare time, she had finally picked up an extracurricular activity.

While searching for clubs to join at the academy, Lyra stumbled upon a cultural anthropology group and was immediately fascinated by all the different cultures inside and outside of Equestria. Having grown up in a rather uniform, wealthy unicorn section of Canterlot, she wasn’t used to diverse areas of living or different cultures being expressed in one area. She wanted to learn more about it all but knew if her family found out about her not spending all of her time on music, she would be in big trouble.

Lyra managed to balance everything at the academy, but never let her anthropology friends and musician acquaintances mix or meet. She always made sure to avoid everyone but music ponies when her parents came to visit, and her family seemed satisfied. When she graduated from the academy, Lyra decided to live right outside of Canterlot in Ponyville. While her family easily could have provided for her, she wanted to try out life on her own. But living away from her family meant she had limited means, which is why she decided it was financially responsible to find a roommate.

To Lyras’ relief, Bon Bon had never heard of her family or their long line of musicians. Whenever she was with her roomie, Lyra felt like she could really be herself. She constantly talked to Bon Bon about the things that interested her about anthropology, and while her roommate didn’t find herself as interested in it, she let Lyra talk as much as she needed.

Lyra still hasn’t told her family about her interests in anthropology and doesn’t really ever plan to. Being a musician allows her to travel every-so-often for gigs, and whenever she travels, she makes sure to learn more about the cultures and creatures around her.

And here’s a little peek into their relationship:

The two grew close rather quickly and were known to do everything together. Lyra still had to practice and improve her skills regularly as a professional musician, but really looked forward to their next outing. They would have a picnic and enjoy the weather on the nicest of days or have indoor fun like bowling or board games on days when the sun wasn’t shining.

Lyra and Bon Bon seem to bring out the best in each other. Bon Bon teaches Lyra that there’s more to life than pleasing other ponies, and Lyra teaches Bon Bon that no matter what you do, you can always find something fun in it.

Although unspoken, it’s clear to nearly everyone in Ponyville that the two mares are closer than most best friends. They don’t find a need to put a label on their relationship (once it becomes more than friendly) and don’t really seem to care what other ponies think.

Once Bon Bon’s past and identity are forced out by the bugbear attack in Ponyville, Lyra feels rather betrayed but knows she adores Bon Bon more than anything. Bon Bon assures her friend that although she was given a new name and a fresh start, she’s still the exact same mare she’s always been. The two move past it, and Lyra even starts playfully teasing Bon Bon about her secret agent status.

Later in life, when the two have finally publicly labeled the relationship as romantic and decided to be committed only to one another, Lyra struggles to tell her family. Bon Bon gently coaxes her into telling her family, and the only thing they have to say to their daughter once she introduces her partner is: “she’s not a unicorn…interesting”. Bon Bon is hardly affected by their words and shrugs it off, while Lyra continuously apologizes for them after. She didn’t need much of an excuse to distance herself from her family, and now she seems to have it.

Lyra and Bon Bon got married soon after, holding a small wedding in Town Hall (similar to Cranky and Matilda). They only invited their closest friends and kept it simple, seeing no reason to spend a fortune on one day when they had the rest of their lives together.

That's all I got on these two! I'm planning on making a next gen for them soon, but I couldn't think about getting the design finished without drawing them for headcanons first
