This piece was a practice for me to see if I could still create a decent painting style, which after making so many quick pieces with line art for people’s requests, I was worried that I was losing the feel, and the fun, of doing things in that art process. Sense I am preparing myself to go to an art school for concept artist training next year; I needed to see how well I could do a ‘realistic’ looking painting with proper gradients with colors and metallic effects of the guardspony’s armor as well as the bristle broom crest on top of the helmet. I think I did a good job on this one, mostly satisfied from the results, It think the mane and helmet bristle, but could have been put more time into producing better effects on them. I think I the facial expressions is actually very good in showing the intensity of his gaze, and the gallop isn’t bad either in its dynamic posing, giving off a charging unicorn feel to the subject. All though I believe I could have done a better study on the leg posing, because I am not sure if their positions are right in mid-gallop. The background was very quickly done, I would have liked to add more detail on them, but when I tried it somehow ruined the fog-oppressing atmosphere that I was trying to create. The cobblestoned was done very quickly and I actually thought ahead in putting stroke and gradients after that start multiplying then and positioned them and just add some highlights to them with a textured brush.
