There's a reason they say Never Split The Party, and it has less to do with TPKs than you think. In truth, how much splitting your party can handle is dependent on what your group of players is comfortable managing, but they're still words of sage advice.

Fluttershy: Um… I’d be happy to? What is it?
Princess Celestia: My guards will fill you in on the details, but basically, I want you to… help Philomena.
DM: <scribble> <scribble>
Applejack: Wow. What kinda doozy are ya cookin’ up back there?
DM: I’m writing what the guard’s going to tell you in a bit. Think of it as… a puzzle to keep you occupied while I manage Rarity in the other room.
Twilight Sparkle: Wait, you’re leaving us alone again??
DM: Okay, here you go. Have fun!
