"Stay."

"I… I can't."

Typical. Of course Luna would back out- and just as his plan had finally started to fall into place.
Can't back out now. Too far in to let her slip away this easily.

"We're hidden. No one will know. Besides, there's no way anyone could know." Sombra tried for some reassuring words, but conversation was never one of his strong suits.

Her eyes seemed to glow. Was that guilt he saw? Hidden in the beamy darkness of her pupils- it had to be. But Sombra didn't care. He wasn't here to love her.

"We both know what'd happen, Som… I can't take the risk anymore." Luna looked away from him.

"You've already taken the risk." His expression was empty, his voice a shadow.

Luna didn't budge. Not convincing enough.

"Come back to bed, Luna," he tried, some meaning shining through in his voice now. Better.

"And what if Tia found out? She'd have me exiled again. I can't spend another moment on my moon. Not again." She shivered. Clearly, Sombra wasn't getting to her.

"Do you truly think so lowly of me?" He scoffed. "I've told you- I've changed. And I've already told you we won't be found."

"I-I know you've changed," Luna glanced at him from the side. "But no one else will. The ponies here… they're not too quick to give second chances. I was just… I was lucky."

"I don't need a second chance. All I want is to be here with you," Sombra emphasized, and this much was true- he didn't need the ponies to trust him. He was smarter than that. They'd never let him back in their sights.

But maybe they'd let someone else. Someone just like Sombra. An agent undercover. An heir.

Finally, Luna nodded, the corners of her mouth cracking into a smile. "You're right, I'm sorry. I'm not in the moment."

There was still doubt in her eyes, and it was clear to see. But it didn't bother him. As long as she played along.

"That's good, Luna," he smiled. A terrible sight, really- the happy expression looked odd on his face. Luna didn't notice. "Soon you'll see," he continued, "I'm not trying to do anything other than be with you."

A beautiful lie, and of course she believed it. He was a good actor, and she was convinced he really loved her. She crawled back into the bed.

"Of course, Sombra."

Then they made this kiddo:

Hopefully most of this is self explanatory, but here's a tl;dr explanation: Sombra is well aware that he has a really, really slim chance at taking over Equestria. He hasn't given up, not at all- but he's trying a new method. He knows he'll either die or get exiled for his crimes, but he'll always exist in the shadows. And if he has an heir to communicate with even if he's dead, he can take over through his offspring. And no one could possibly kill an innocent pony caught in the middle. If his heir was to succeed, he'd rule beside him through the shadows. Win-win.

This takes place when Sombra returns to the Crystal Empire (the first time), before Flurry's born. Luna gives birth to her son Panther (named Salvatore at the time) shortly after, and keeps him concealed from the world for about 6 years. She didn't expect to mother Sombra's child, and she's ashamed of it. She loves her son, but he's a reminder. A reminder of something bad. And she has to get rid of him- to keep her own name clear, and to spare him the possibility of a painful death. Who knows what the Equestrians would do to a child of Sombra.
