Knick Knack and Moth Ball were two ponies that Trixie was….familiar with. Since her wife's step brother was a big antiquer, she and Starlight often found themselves in the local antique shop, ran by the two stallions. They….hated her. And Starlight. And their best customer Sunburst. Yes, they seemed to hate EVERYPONY. They were even rude to her little Witch Hazel when he (very politely, she might add) asked where the toys were. It took all her might and her wife reminding her that her brother wouldn't let them hear the end of it if they got him banned to not chew them out. Today, Trixie was there to pick up yet another plate for Sunburst. With her granddaughter Fox in tow (they were having a day out together), she entered the dusty little shop. "Wipe Ya Hooves!" The standard greeting of Moth Ball's rang out aggressively. Trixie huffed and rolled her eyes, but obliged, wiping her hooves on the "welcome" mat as rudely as possible. She wasn't one to just let such a mean tone slide, her pride didn't allow it. The only thing that kept her from exploding was her wife's words, her little granddaughter by her side and the thought of how wimpy her brother in law would be if they got banned. "Hello, Moth Ball," Trixie said, obviously straining to keep her voice even, "I'm here for-" "Sunburst's plate, yes," he cut her off, matching that edge in her voice, "right away". As Moth Ball left for storage, his husband took his place, bustling about organising the wares in the display cabinet below the cash register. Trixie thought to herself that they couldn't possibly be more organised, but perhaps that was just her. As she turned up her nose at the crotchety old earth pony, she felt a tug at the sleeve of her button up shirt. She looked down to see Fox staring up at her with those big puppy dog (pardon the pun) eyes.
"Grammy,"her voice was sweet and small, "where are the toys, you said there would be toys".
"Around, sweetie," Trixie's voice immediately went soft when addressing the little diamond dog, "we'll go find them after I'm done here".
While Trixie and Fox were talking, Knick Knack spared a look up at the pair. Then immediately halted. His pupils shot to the size of pin pricks. Then blew out until they almost took over the gray of his irises. Something very rare happened. A grin grew large on his face.
"Oh. My. Goodness," the stallion stood up on his hind legs, fore hooves resting on the cabinet. He then turned his head to the side and yelled, "Moth Ball! Moth Ball, come and look at this adorable little creature!"
"What?" Trixie said bluntly. Creature? Did he mean Fox? Yes, Fox was the most adorable little thing, anyone who'd ever met her had remarked on this. Trixie just never imagined that the hostile owner of the antique shop would be one of them.
Well, make that owners, because as soon as Moth Ball returned (Sunburst's plate in hoof), he let out a huge gasp and practically threw the plate onto the cabinet as he rushed with his husband to kneel in front of Fox. Trixie observed the two stallions clamouring over each other to coo and fawn over the little pup, who seemed to be lapping up the attention, as she usually did, her tail wagging
"Aren't you a sweetheart?!" Knick Knack said, "What's your name, honey?"
"Fox!" She chirped in response.
"Well, Fox, we'd be happy to show you our toy collection!" Moth said, resting a hoof on his husband's back, "Maybe even let you have a sneak peak at some new arrivals," He added with a wink, "How's that sound".
"Awesome!" Fox exclaimed, following the two earth ponies to the back of the store, leaving her confused grandmother in the dust
