Aaaand here come the forces of evil. I think that canon version is all like "earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns shall live together because otherwise the winter will come and freeze you all"… and this is plain stupid, imho. This means that equestrians need evil winter spirits to not fall into racism inside their own species, and the series' ending had just shown how easily they can do this.

So I chose a more complicated way like "SNOW FOR THE SNOW QUEEN! ICE FOR THE ICE THRONE! FRIENDSHIP IS FOR THE WEAK!" which allows to see how one can come to such ideas, how should be treated then, and, at last, what a horror is to have an entity like this, with its free will and ultimately evil goals, just existing in your world.
