- Merlin was born from an impromptu affair between a set of young and hotblooded ponies—Starswirl and Celestia—before the Princess of the Night fell. Tia kept Merlin a secret for her subjects out of fear of their Princess committing an act so scandalous, and the fact that merlin was born with ancient unicorn blood coursing through his veins.
- As a colt, Merlin was extremely studious and hardworking, perfecting his craft to levels that could only be compared to the almighty Starswirl. Merlin loved his mother dearly, but found it odd that she kept him indoors most of his life, so like any hotblooded colt he would sneak away to explore the foreign outside world that was so exciting to the colt.
- As he grew older, his thirst for adventure turned into a thirst to amass as much knowledge at he could—and it would cost him dearly. Experimenting with old magic and spellwork that made him vanish from his quarters in a fireball. Tia was heartbroken and mourned her son, only for the grief to be amplified tenfold when her sister betrayed her.
- Fastword thousands of years to the present day and in the middle of court one afternoon, Merlin appeared in a swirl of fire and magic. Tia was thrilled to see her baby boy again, but others in her court express concern that this could be something dark imitating the sorcerer to get close to the Princess.
- Displaced from time, Merlin has to make the best of his situation and learn to live in the Equestria his mother so lovingly crafted while he was gone. He serves loyally as a the magical adviser to his little sister while he struggles with ideas of sending himself home to live the life he was meant to have before the accident.
