Star Swirl and Discord.

Starswirl.
Starswirl, perhaps, was one of the most known sorcerer in all of Equestria history. Nobody knows where he came from and how old he trully was. Some say that he wasn't just a pony, but rather a celestial, spirit that was created in the oldest part of raw magical essence. Others say that he was centenarian and was born in one of the first pony tribes (and, as a prove of this, they say that the swirls on his horn look more like swirls on the horns of ancient unicors, and that swirls were indicating the flow of magic when unicorns were only establishing from earthponies). The last ones claime, that Starswirl was not just one pony, but a constant cycle of change of the powerful mage and his apprentice, that when the great wizard dies, his apprentice accepts the role of "Starswirl" (and those ponies always like to make an example of Clover the Clever, that was his apprentice and that he should have become new "Starswirl"). In the end, no one to this day was able to find out Starswirl's real nature, but debates about his past are still being held.
Starswirl himself was a rather secretive person and preferred to remain in the shadows, appearing only when the world was in danger in the form of powerful creatures or from the ponies themselves. Starswirl led a rather ascetic lifestyle. Despite the fact that he lived in the castle (albeit old), he stayed there very rarely, and preferred to travel the world, in search of new creatures and magic spells. Throughout his life, Starswirl had only two robes: the first one was a shabby cloak and hat, more reminiscent of a student’s outfit than a powerful magician (it is not surprising that most ponies didn't even recognize the famous magician when they met him in live, taking him for an ordinary tramp). The second outfit was the one that most ponies imagine Starswirl in-cloak and hat of deep blue color, embroidered with stars and the moon, and covered with small enchanted bells, emitting soothing sounds. Starswirl himself didn't like this outfit. He wore it only on major holidays or when meeting with nobles and tribal leaders.
Starswirl's life was mysterious. But no less mysterious was his death. Nobody still knows what happened to the great magician and how his path ended. Whether he died in a battle with a powerful monster, or did someone take the life of a great sorcerer while he was asleep. No one knows, except for two princesses who vowed to take this secret with them to the grave.

Discord.
The first thing Discord remembered when he woke up was beautiful purple eyes full of fear and tears. The second thing that Discord remembered after waking up was a sharp pain in his side and turquoise eyes filled with rage. All other memories were covered in fog filled with screams and explosions. When Discord woke up a second time, he was in the mountains, alone and without the slightest recollection of who he is and who he was before.
After everything that happened, Discord went to wander around Equestria, watching its inhabitants and their way of life. Ponies were interesting creatures. Despite the fact that they all belonged to the one species, they constantly clashed with each other. And every time seeing these conflicts, a desire began to awake in Discord. And this desire was to wreak havoc wherever he appeared. At first, it were simple tricks and jokes aimed at unsuspecting ponies. But soon, these tricks grew into conflicts between neighbors, families, tribes and entire nations.
Princess Celestia and Luna desperately tried to catch Discord, but each time he eluded them, leaving behind him only grief and devastation.
In the end, they managed to track down Discord and fight him. As everyone knows, the princesses defeated the Master of Chaos and imprisoned him in a stone statue for hundreds of years. But this victory brought nothing to the princesses, except the sorrow.
