Who would've thought two former mischief makers would become the best of friends? Well, it actually makes sense. These two are such close gal pals, especially since they each went down dark paths in getting revenge on Twilight Sparkle. Here's how these two became such great friends.

After Starlight renounced her corrupted ways of making ponies equal, she became Twilight's first student of friendship. One of her earlier lessons was to make a new friend in Ponyville to invite to a dinner party with Princess Celestia. Of course, there were some struggles with some of the choices Twilight's friends recommended. Pinkie Pie introduces her to Mrs. Cake, but her attempt to impress with a magically whipped-up cake sent the wrong message. Applejack introduced Starlight to Big McIntosh, but her use of magic to make him more talkative angered Applejack. Rarity tried to help Starlight meet ponies by making her an elaborate dress, but it wouldn't be ready in time for Twilight's dinner the next evening. Rainbow Dash suggested that Starlight meet Spitfire of the Wonderbolts, but Starlight didn't know who the Wonderbolts are. She briefly got along well with Fluttershy's animal friends, especially her pet rabbit Angel, but she didn't think they were what Twilight had in mind. To get her mind off her growing stress, Starlight got a spa treatment at the Ponyville Day Spa. There, she met a pony who was also from out of town and burdened by a dark past, and she was happy to finally meet someone she can relate to. She introduced to Twilight her new friend. Twilight was excited as well until Starlight revealed who her new friend was: Trixie! Twilight disapproved of their friendship, doubting Trixie's intentions despite previously forgiving her. Starlight argued that Twilight should place trust in her student just as Celestia placed trust in hers, and Twilight hesitantly agreed. Trixie began to doubt the value of second chances, and even though she confessed her past crimes out of jealousy towards Twilight, Starlight proved her feelings to be genuine. Twilight, however, didn't approve, and gave Starlight alternatives, including DJ Pon-3, Derpy, and Cranky Doodle Donkey. Offended by Twilight's distrust and undue concern, Starlight told her she wanted to make friends on her own. A short while later, Starlight and Trixie discussed Trixie's upcoming show. Trixie wanted to perform the "Moonshot Manticore Mouth Dive", a dangerous magic trick previously only pulled off by pony magician Hoofdini. As Trixie was nervous about attempting the trick by herself, Starlight offered to be her stage assistant, giving her more confidence. Unfortunately, Trixie's show fell on the same evening as Twilight's dinner party with Princess Celestia, leaving Starlight with a difficult choice. But seeing how she was appalled with Twilight's lack of trust, she chose to help Trixie instead. Of course, when Twilight discovered Starlight was missing for her dinner party with Celestia, she angrily confronted her about missing the dinner and being friends with Trixie, revealing that she didn't completely trust her. Trixie thoughtlessly revealed that she partly became friends with Starlight just to beat Twilight at something. Despite Trixie telling her that she got carried away, Starlight was convinced that no one wantrf to be her friend, and she ran off in tears. Trixie attempted to play it off, but Twilight noticed that she was distraught over driving her only friend away. Trixie put on her show as planned, but she was unenthusiastic as a result of her falling out with Starlight. Twilight approached the heartbroken Starlight and apologized for trying to pick and choose her friends for her. She realized she was wrong about Trixie and encouraged Starlight to make her own decisions. At the very climax of the "Moonshot Manticore Mouth Dive", Starlight returned to make it a success. As the two took a bow, Trixie introduced Starlight as her "great and powerful assistant and best friend".

Since then, the two Unicorns have been very close friends and usually quite the team. There were time Starlight would turn to Trixie as her friend. For instance, when Starlight was nervous about going to the Sunset Festival at her old village, and if the villagers forgave her, Twilight suggested that Starlight would bring a friend along to help make things easier. Though Twilight subtly hinted that Starlight bring her along, Starlight instead chose to bring along Trixie, much to Trixie's delight and Twilight's disappointment. After an unsuccessful visit to Starlight's town, she and Trixie noticed something was wrong with the Mane Six. The two friends discovered that the Changelings returned and captured the Mane Six and the rulers, seizing control of Ponyville, Canterlot, and the Crystal Empire, which would allow Queen Chrysalis to rule over Equestria. Starlight and Trixie mounted a rescue with help from Discord and reformed Changeling Thorax. After Discord teleported the team to the outskirts of the Changeling Kingdom, they found that their magic was negated by the power of Queen Chrysalis's enchanted throne. So Starlight directed the others in misguiding Changeling drones. When Discord got caught in a trap of Fluttershy impersonators, Trixie sacrificed herself to his impostor so Starlight and Thorax could find and confront Chrysalis. After Starlight told Thorax to share the love he got from his new friends with Chrysalis, he metamorphosed him into a new form, inspiring the other Changelings to do the same, freeing all of Starlight's captured friends. For their heroics, Starlight, Trixie, Discord and Thorax were presented with Pink Hearts of Courage for defeating Queen Chrysalis. Sometime after Thorax became the new king of the Changelings, Starlight and Trixie visited him. Thorax, however, was having difficulties with his brother Pharynx, the only changeling to not accept the hive's new way of sharing love. Starlight and Trixie tried to convince Pharynx to abandon the old changeling ways, though this was minimally hampered by Trixie's flippant personality. Though Starlight and Trixie's actions nearly drove Pharynx to leave the changeling hive forever, he and the rest of the swarm came together to drive off a maulwurf, and he metamorphosed as well. Moons later, when Twilight and her friends were chosen to be Equestria's new rulers as Celestia and Luna prepare for their retirement, Chrysalis, Lord Tirek and Cozy Glow were on the loose. Starlight instructed Trixie to evacuate the students at the School of Friendship as Chrysalis arrived to attack Starlight. She then joined the battle against the villains together.

Even friendships can be tested between these two pony pals. Starlight was teaching Trixie some transfiguration spells, but Trixie got carried away and transformed all sorts of things into teacups. Later, Starlight attempted to teach Trixie a teleportation spell, but when attempting to make an apple teleport, she accidentally made the Cutie Map teleport. As they searched for the map, Trixie unknowingly angered Starlight with her nonchalant attitude toward the situation and that she couldn't remember what she was thinking of when she cast the spell; unbeknownst to her, Starlight kept storing her anger in a bottle. When Trixie caught Starlight putting more anger in the bottle, she tried to get a look at it, but the bottle accidentally broke, infecting Granny Smith, Bulk Biceps and a jeweler pony with Starlight's anger. As the trio attacked Trixie, voicing Starlight's own frustrations toward her, Starlight managed to extract the anger, and admit her frustrations. Trixie apologized for unknowingly angering her friend, and they reconcile. Trixie then remembered what she was thinking of when she teleported the table: the spa (as she was fondly remembering the day they met at the time). She and Starlight return the map to the Castle, with Trixie suggesting that they erase the memories of the spa ponies so Twilight wouldn't find out. A moon later, after Trixie performed a show in Ponyville with her assistant Starlight, she was approached by a stallion from Saddle Arabia named Hoo'Far, who asked that she brought her magic show to his homeland. He also offered to trade his wagon for hers, but Trixie refused. Trixie invited Starlight to join her on the trip, but while the trip started out good, the two mares began to get on each others' nerves. When Starlight accepted Hoo'Far's renewed offer of a wagon trade, Trixie was outraged, and the two parted ways. Trixie tried to get her wagon back from Hoo'Far, but was unsuccessful until a repentant Starlight returned. After proving their friendship to Hoo'Far, he agreed to reverse the trade. Even Trixie became annoyed by how Starlight's dedication to her guidance counselor position would prevent them from spending any time together, and reminds her of how they need to help Maud and Mudbriar with their "Spring Solst-astic" party. After being forced to handle everything herself, Trixie encouraged Starlight to take a break. This, however, seemed to cause Silverstream to go missing, and her brother Terramar accusses Starlight for dismissing her. Trixie immediately stood up for Starlight, despite the latter neglecting her best friend. Nonetheless, Starlight, Trixie, Sunburst, Maud Pie, Mudbriar, and Terramar went search for Silverstream, and had a run in with a migrating flock of cockatrices. After Silverstream is found (she wanted to finish her assignment before going home for spring break), Starlight still felt guilty for everything that happened and failed in her duties as counselor, but her friends, including Trixie, told her that she cannot completely devote herself to her students or else she risks neglecting her friends (and vice-versa). Starlight decided to set a schedule for students to see her at specific times during the day.

With her coronation as ruler of Equestria approaching, Twilight decided to appoint Starlight as the new headmare for the School of Friendship. When Trixie commented that Twilight ran the school with her friends, Starlight decided to appoint a vice-headmare. Octavia, Dr. Hooves, Big McIntosh, Spoiled Rich, and Trixie all applied for the position; as the interviews progressed, Starlight realized that Trixie was hopelessly unsuited for the job, but did not reject her out of respect for their friendship. When Trixie endangered the students during an in-class field trip, Starlight lost her temper and sharply berated her for her carelessness. Reminded by Twilight that not everypony is right for a given job, Starlight apologized to Trixie and not being straightforward from the beginning that she was not qualified for the position of vice headmare. Trixie admited her own mistake in assuming Starlight would give her the job, but the she suggested on hiring Sunburst as vice-headstallion, seeing how he is perfect for the job. Taking into account Trixie's hidden insightfulness, talent for giving advice, and thoughtful consideration of others, Starlight offered her a position as the school's new student counselor. Since then, Trixie went from a Great and Powerful magician to a Great and Powerful counselor, and she will always have a Great and Powerful best friend to be with her.
