i dont wanna go too far into night lights parents because theyre not super important, but i wanna talk about like. what night light's personality is and how he's complicit in velvet's abuse, and why he's kinda just. like that.

Night Light was an only child, raised in an upper middle class family within canterlot. His father was an lawyer, and highly respected by his peers among the elites. His mother was a house wife, quiet, meek, "perfect," — while their only son, Night, was a grade A student and devoted student athlete. They were by all accounts, the typical "perfect" unicorn family.

The trouble is, seedy things layed just below the surface. Night was never let on to what, but ponies would come and go from their house at odd times, ponies would go missing, sometimes things would get loud and things would get broken and it was all incredibly frightening — but his parents insisted there was simply nothing to be concerned about, and if anyone were to ask, he knew nothing about it. Everything was quiet and calm and normal, just your typical nuclear family here.

"Now, Nighty, what do you say to the nice policemen when they ask what you saw from the luster household last night?"

"'I don't know who the Luster's were. I saw nothing and I heard nothing. I did my homework in my room after dinner before going to bed at 10pm. I wasn't disturbed."

"'Atta boy. Now, how about we go get some ice cream huh? Oh, but don't tell your mother!"

So I've said this before, Night Light meets Velvet when they're both in high school. Night was head of the school buckball team, very much the popular type, very goofy and a bit socially inept — while Velvet, though not unpopular, was much more quiet and more into her studies. Night was absolutely smitten with her, and the two were high school sweethearts. it was very much young, dopey, teenage love. their parents both greatly approved of them as a couple, with Night's father being an important business assosciate to Royal Flush, so it simply made sense that they stay together.

After high school, the two split temporarily — with Night Light heading off to train at the school of royal guards, while Velvet went off to university to study. idk some kind of literature degree. They reconnected after graduating, with Velvet securing a job as a writer for the Canterlot press (with a little help and nudging the publishers from her father), while Night Light took up a position as a royal guard in Canterlot Castle (earning him several scars, mostly from ponies stupid enough to think they could infiltrate and rob Canterlot castle itself).

After they were wed, and when Velvet fell pregnant with Shining, Night Light retired from his position, and instead took up a teaching position at Canterlot University.

Night Light is complicit in what goes on between Velvet and their kids. he's too focused on maintaining normality, believing his wife knew best. She may get angry some times, but, well, that's what makes her her isn't it? it's her own way of showing affection. And she is right, she just wants their kids to do well for themselves and head in the right direction. They'll understand when they're older… she'll get through that phase…. she'll come back… she'll talk to us again…….

essentially, he's a "your mothers right sweetie : ) love you tho" dad.
