“I just drive a boat,” Nightingale cut her off. He waved dismissively. “There are a dozen more ponies who do more important work than me, before you’ll settle in. Starting with The Lady of the House. She’ll meet you when we land, take you back to her house. She can keep you there until you’re ready to move along. From there you’ll move to Halterfax, and then down to Ponyville. We have a house waiting for you.” He peered down at the child in the mare’s hands. Changeling children looked so strange. His chitin hadn’t hardened yet, and his eyes were multicoloured instead of the usual flat blue. “I apologize for my rudeness, but how long will you need?” He scratched his chin and added, “That is to say, how long until changeling children learn to shapeshift? I’ve never… seen one, before.”
Nightingale’s official job may be as Luna’s factotum, but his skills have never been limited to serving wine and greeting guests. Princess Luna sometimes finds cause for Nightingale to visit another country, and it sometimes transpires that when he returns, he has guests. One must always help out a neighbour, after all, even if that help is not strictly legal. Of course, having founded the Motuvore–an underground railroad dedicated to finding homes for peaceful Changelings–Nightingale has never been overly concerned with legality.
