When I reviewed the first movie with Movie Slate I never really actually did so. I just had Movie Slate give up on it just for the concept alone, thus proving that not only can she be snobby and close-minded, but she can also be so judgemental that she judges a movie just for the cover alone. I used that update to show that Movie Slate isn't perfect, and I liked to see that people did have a reaction to it. Now with the second one I've got to finally draw some Sharks, some tornadoes, and some Movie Slate wielding a chainsaw, which is an idea that's been stuck in my mind for quite a lot of time. This one was fun to work on, it's also the only Shark Week picture that's in color, though with how the color palette turned out it's a pretty desaturated tone (thank goodness for that Big Fucking Chainsaw).

"Sharknado 2: The Second One is one of those movies I wasn't particularly thrilled about. The first movie was such an anomaly when it comes to this sub-sub-sub-genre of exploitation films that trying to recreate the same thing would've been impossible. It might've been easier to literally catch lightning inside a glass jar. So maybe that's why I was so pleased with it, because my expectations where so low they might as well be living with the Fraggles. Sharknado 2 is the type of sequel that many other sequels should be. Instead of being a retread of the original, it expands upon the stupidity and silliness of it and tries out new things. When you have an outrageous concept such as a twister full of sharks you can only go to absurdity and beyond. I admire and defend Sharknado for being so brave and mindless, but maybe that's its biggest failing. At times it becomes too self aware, and that's evidenced by the constant cuts to the weather channel, winks at the audience, and a severe overabundance of cameos that are either hit or miss (_having Ted fucking Striker as the pilot is ingenious, though). But it never becomes so self aware that it goes cynical, the characters remain likeable, and the scenes are fittingly ridiculous and intentionally funny (that jab at Cloverfield with the head of the Statue of Liberty takes the cake). Hell, I was even impressed that Tara Reid delivers a pretty good performance! She has her hand bitten off by a shark, and instead of bitching and moaning like she did in the first movie, she shoves a circular chainsaw on the stump and joins the protagonist to save the day. That was another good surprise in a movie that's almost entirely built out of good surprises.

So yeah, these are the thoughts of a heavily biased and opinionated fan of the franchise, but Sharknado 2 is everything you think it is and then some. It's stupid, outrageous, ridiculous, cheap, it makes no sense whatsoever, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I rate it:
