Well… To be quick about the answer, I could simply say kelpies are mythical fish ponies with a bear trap for a mouth, a siren’s song, and hides which can not only become impossibly sticky, but can resist strikes from spears, though I’ve never went out of my way to prove this point!

Pony mythology generally states kelpies as being a mixture of spirits tied to bodies of water, ready to drag the unaware into the cold depths. Or with less flare for the dramatic… Boogeymen that haunted the swamplands, coats, lakes, and rivers of their ancestor’s times. I being a kelpie can say that’s… Partly true.

We are what our ‘mother’ made us.

To understand it fully you’d need to fully grasp where the kelpie race came from!

Long ago when the world was young, the ink of creation still wet in places, the Great Scribe of our world, Mother Mare, Regal Lady, Faust, whatever you wish to call her, looked out upon her creations with pride. Under the careful strokes of her quill continents formed, the elements given shape and set loose upon her creation; however this was not enough as the world was chaotic and messy a mere sketch of what it could become.

To solve this, the Scribe created her Justicars, in her image they would stand alicorns, keepers of order and makers of law. Each were assigned tasks, elements to watch over, aspects of nature to control, realms above and below to maintain. Yet the Justicars were not enough and found quickly they could not be everywhere at once, to solve this the races of our world were slowly crafted one after another — the pegasi and gryphons sprang from the Scribe’s ink wells when Zephyr and her brother Nimbus requested aid in controlling the skies, the Zebra from Sirocco when the great deserts were formed! Needless to say the world became populated by these races…

But the Scribe noticed something, so many of her new children were separated by the seas, great bodies of water that aesthetically she found pleasing but in practicality, well that was another story. Travel over them was dangerous to put it lightly and the vast bodies of water needed to be tamed, so it was that the Justicar Okeanos requested the kelpies to be brought forth from Mother Mare’s scrolls.

The myths claim that the kelpie were not complete when disaster struck, they were still upon the Scribe’s table, half formed the day our lady vanished from the Crystal throne — the day that Tartarus, the realm below within which dwelt creatures that had not been thought up yet, and some still that were simply to destructive to be allowed to wander the earth, was unleashed. It isn’t known who or what caused this, the Alicorn Wardens of the realm found themselves unable to turn back the tide of meanwhiles and neverweres. Perhaps as it all broke loose something knocked over an ink well and upon the kelpie page it spilled.

The creatures that were forced into existence were of primal terror and unceasing hunger, leering faces that would haunt the water ways of the world throughout the age of chaos that followed the rule of the Scribe and her Alicorns. The kelpies, to their credit did tame the oceans, but they did not take sides, anything that dared enter their domain was to be hunted, Tartarian or not, and Okeanos was left with a terrible decision. The Justicar of the Rivers and Waters weighted her options, she could have destroyed her children, ending the cycle and allowing the oceans to return to their violent ways, she could have hunted them from every stream and puddle, but she didn’t.

No, Okeanos instead took upon herself the darkest of her children’s traits in an effort to save them… And the Justicar broke because of it. Finding herself losing her mind with the tidal pull of the moon, the day finding her lucid and calm like an undisturbed lake’s surface, and at night the embodiment of the sea’s fury. In that moment our mother had become exactly as the element she had set out to tame, all at once a life giver and a great destroyer.

But her children did survive. Hmph, maybe it’s because of her we seem to adore children.

Eons would pass as this race grew, slowly changing with the unending march of time. Savages become civilized, raiders became pirates who became traders, tribes became clans, and clans unified into a loose nation. Diets of anything that happens to be swimming by and isn’t a kelpie became fish and fruit. Well.. Not entirely, but some habits die hard of course. Predatory tendencies and so on.

Long story short we’re a race that wasn’t quite finished exactly, sure some of us enjoy the whole lake monster thing, myself included, but some are kindly only fisherponies, sailors, marines. So.. What are kelpies? Hm. Ponies. Albeit a bit different than your average, but then again you’re not like a pegasus are you? Or an earth pony. So many different colors in the grand scheme of things, and so many sounds- Errr. Wait, did you mean scientifically? Feth.

(Guh, I did ramble something fierce, not sure it came out exactly how I intended, but I don’t want to bore you lot to death!)
