Princess Celestia is the longtime ruler of the land of the sun, The Solar Kingdom. Legends say that she has watched over the land for before it was settled properly by the ancestors of modern pony kind. She raises the sun while her sister raises the moon. The two of them kept the day and night cycle running throughout the world without out much input. When it was learned that the two of them were in charge of this momentous task, they were quickly worshiped by the gathering masses. One of the reasons the Solar and Lunar Kingdoms become so populated was how quickly ponies off all walks of life wanted to get close to the gods that walk the earth.
As their kingdom grew in size, it became apparent that they had disagreements on how they should rule, and so they peacefully split the land into the Solar Kingdom and the Lunar Republic. There has been peace between the two sides until a certain event. Princess Luna became distraught with how much praise the day was getting and how little ponies enjoyed and were active during her nights. Her envy slowly festered until she became corrupt. Her own darkness overtook the Alicorn of the Night and turned her into a monster. Regrettably, she exiled her sister to the moon for a millennia. However, she knew she would need more power to purify Luna. Power she didn’t have. The sister’s fight was viewed as an act of aggression, and caused a long time battle named the Eclipse War. The war lasted decades, and was the largest war the two lands have ever seen. It’s been 1000 years since the war, so there are no clear tensions between the two. This is seen as history knows of the Eclipse War, but not of what caused it nor who actually came out the victor. Celestia could only hope it would happen like this as she waits for those that can free her sister.
The Princess of the Sun waited for the Warriors of Light to return the land, as she was told they would appear to her in times of crisis by her Mother as the Warriors of Darkness would appear for her younger sister. She sought those that she believed had those abilities while they were young, but she learned after Sunset Shimmer that trying to force awakening can lead to unfortunate circumstances. Celestia took on a second student whom she merely guided, not directly pushed. She eventually sent her prized student to a border town that developed near the epicenter of the two sisters’ battle. She knew that the other potential Warriors of Light resided there whether by coincidence or fate. The alicorn wasn’t expecting potential Warriors of Darkness there, and beyond that, she wasn’t expecting them to awaken alongside her Warriors of Light.
As a Paladin, she has equal parts offense and defense. Her Holy Swords act as a catalyst for White Magicks, but also cuts as you expect blessed blades to. Her White Magicks are not as powerful or varied as a White Mage’s arsenal, but it's always nice to have some extra healing.
Sword of the Sun — A blade forged by Canterlot’s top smiths. She requested that the hilt have demonic horns. A reminder to know the limits of power and good intentions.
Shield of the Star — A shield made with purple jewels encrusted in them. The smiths thought them an odd request, but she simply told them that they reminded her of her darker…almost nightmarish years. A stern lesson in protecting others does no good if the protector throws her life (or sanity) away. She takes comfort knowing that even if she fell, her students and sister will catch her. Most of her sword techniques utilize her shield or flat of the sword to neutralize the enemy, rather than land the killing blow. Not that she’s against killing, but she really tries her best to avoid it.
