[Previous][Index][Next][Follow me on twitter?]* * The tricky deal with writing bleak moments in a story, where the characters have found themselves brought to a halt by doubt, hopelessness and overwhelming hardship, is striking the right balance between conveying the gravity of the situation, and finding the appropriate amount of time to do it in. Many JRPGs have great examples of it done wrong, where characters ham it up so much the weight is lost, or the scene just drags on, and on, and on (often the two go together). Magical Mystery Cure was another good example of bad handling, though at the other end of the scale, with the problem coming and going too quickly, and too easily. For me, the right balance is to deliver a quick, hard blow to the gut, and move the story along just as you regain your senses. Who knows if I got it right here though. * *My Little Pony © Hasbro,Friendship is Magic was created by and assistants.
