Nightmare star is the evil alter ego of Princess Celestia. Celestia is a very controlled pony. She understands that her bears the weight of all the ponies she governs. One of the reasons she made Twilight follow her destiny was because she couldn’t bear the burden of two lands by her lonesome. She knew it would push her past her limits physically and more importantly emotionally. Like her sister, if her darkness overtook her, she would become an Alicorn no different than a monster.

After all the Princesses were rescued from the clutches of Chrysalis in the hive, their celebrations were short lived as Luna didn’t get up as quickly as the rest of the group from their gelatinous prison. Luna was one of the first taken by the Changelings, and was thus put though the most stress. Luna didn’t make it back to her Republic on her own. She collapsed halfway there. The Lunar Princess could feel her consciousness fading after collapsing, but made sure to pass on to Celestia to not be mad at the Changelings. She fell into a coma for a few months after that.

Celestia could feel her sanity slipping. She was well aware that she should have forgiven the Changelings that fell into line under Thorax since they were putting effort to change, but she couldn’t stop thinking of her sister. The doctors assured her that she should be fine, and while it was a relief, she couldn’t shake her own emotions. Celestia knew that she would not overcome her sanity falling apart. The best thing she could do was to slow down the process as best she could. Before losing what was left of her own self control, she cursed herself into slumber. Her sleep was plagued with nightmares, but she believed that this was simply the worst it would be.

Or she thought. All of this happened over the course of three or so months, as Luna was slowly but steadily recovering. The girls had lad contact with Celestia, but the meetings were too short to gather that something was wrong. It wasn’t until they noticed that the Solar Princess has nt made an appearance in some time. When they decided to check in on her, most of her guards in her inner sanctum had fallen under a slumber spell, and the rest had been acting like nothing was happening. After asking the remaining guards, they realized that the patrolling guards had a very distant look in their eyes, as if they were daydreaming. Sensing a crisis, the Warriors ran to see if Celestia was okay while bracing themselves for a fight. What they found was a Celestia bathed in fire, clutching a Luna doll, and muttering misgivings to those who had slighted her.

Nightmare Star’s full awakening had been held back by Celestia as best she could, but she was reaching her limits as the nightmares wore down what was left of her sanity. Her desire to see punishment and revenge against those who hurt her sister, both in the present and the past, was surfacing and clouding her thoughts. By the time the Warriors arrived, Nightmare Star had taken her physical appearance, but as long as she stayed asleep, that’s as far as Star would go. However, when the Warriors burst in, she felt herself awakening, but not coming to consciousness. Nightmare Star had taken over, but she knew that her student and equal Twilight as well the rest of the Warriors would stop her dead in her tracks.

Luna Doll — A doll Celestia purchased while she was in Crescent. Luna had given it a small enchantment after admiring how well made it was. If held closely by Celestia, it would give the same sensation and warmth as hugging Luna herself. As Celestia felt her own induced sleep taking over, the last thing she remembered doing before falling under was clutching her doll.

Crown of Jewels — A crown the Nightmare Star fashioned from some Celestia’s crown as well as whatever jewelry she could sense near by. What was made was a symmetrical, golden crown fashioned with 6 gems, but when the Warriors showed up to intervene, Nightmare decided that those jewels they represent would look much better instead.
