Dinky Clapping : Uh, Mom… what kind of doll is this?
Derpy Clapping Icon : (gasps) DERP! It's Smarty Pants! Princess Twilight's fillyhood doll!
Dinky Clapping : Is it THE Smarty Pants? It.. looks like it's falling apart…
Derpy Clapping Icon: It's not, my little muffin. It's an officially licensed doll that looks JUST LIKE the original Smarty Pants!
Dinky Clapping: But Mom, what's so "happy" about this Happy Grab Bag?
Derpy Clapping Icon: It's a BARGAIN, Dinky! Mom snatched a bargain with this Fukubukuro bag! DERP! :iconderpyhurrahplz:
Poor little Dinky Doo is too young to appreciate the bargain her adopted mom Derpy Hooves just bagged. Officially licensed Princess Twilight Sparkle products don't come cheap! ;)
Fukubukuro ("mystery grab bag" or "happy grab bag") is a Japanese New Year's Day shopping tradition in which retailers sell on January 1 grab bags filled with premium merchandise that sell for at least half the retail price. Some of those grab bags are filled with poorly selling or overstocked items they're trying to get rid of, and they're instead called "Utsubukuro" (depressing grab bags). And an Utsubukuro is what Derpy got: a replica Smarty Pants doll complete with loose eye threading and yarn hair falling out of its mane and tail. It's supposed to look that cheap, but nopony in their right mind will pay 100 bits for it, even if Twilight herself approved of it. :)
This is a drawing I began back in 2016 but never finished. But with two new My Little Pony-themed Fukubukuro cartoons drawn this year (2017), I pulled this up and updated it.
