"Rose usually comes with when something needs fixin' — even if it's still morning, she wakes up and waits for me with that big smile of hers."
"Does she know a lot about mechanics?"
"Nope. Still likes to help me, though. You know — she holds tools, keeps me company, that sort of thing. And just her being around brightens the room."
"I understand. Even being with the right someone — even not doing anything special — can be quite soothing for the soul."
"That too. But in her case, it's also pretty literal. There's the butt candles — don't tell her I called them that by the way — and then there are the little fire… things that hang around her head."
"Right, the… what are they? Flame spirits? Sprites?"
"No clue. I tend to not understand things I can't stick a wrench in. Not that I didn't try, mind you."
"You did?"
"Eh, you know, once or twice, just out of sheer frustration. They're tied to Rose, sure, but they still have a mind of their own. Doesn't matter that she wants to hang around and help — if they don't, they show it."
"How?"
"They're like cats! Only they're made of fire. Now, they don't burn you unless they really intend to, but when they do…"
"Yeesh."
"Yeah. They're not both like that, though — one of them is usually cooperative. You know, she hangs around, lights stuff for me… even does what I want sometimes, without me telling Rose to tell her that is. The other one… well, that's a different kind of beast. Usually up to no good. But they look the same, and he knows it. Sometimes, he pretends he's the nice one, only to singe my face or something. Maybe he's jealous."
"What's Rose's take on all that?"
"To her, they're like cats, like I said. They're her little babies, they just want to have a bit of fun, come on Copper, it didn't really hurt, did it? Oh look at you, lemme kiss it better…"
"Right…"
"Yeah. It doesn't really hurt much though — not for long, anyway. Most of the time, they both just hang there, right above Rose's head. As long as she's happy, it seems they are too. And really, same goes for me."
