Sky laid on the hospital bed, completely annoyed, and struggling to try and lift the heavy casts that now cover his wings.
Soarin: "Hey, buddy. Don't be messin' around too much. Doc says you'll heal quicker if you get some rest." Soarin playfully nudged the side of his son's head with his own.
Rainbow: "Ha! If he's a son of Rainbow Dash — those casts will be off in no time flat!" Rainbow boasted, which encouraged her son to smile, now filled with new determination to get back out and fly again! Though, him crashing again may want to be avoided….
Then there was a knock on the door and another pony walked in with a smile on their face and clip board in hoof.
Doctor: "Hello, hope I'm not interrupting. "
Rainbow: "Nah. So what's the good word? My kid gonna get outta here soon?" Rainbow smiled and trotted over to stand by Sky and Soarin near the bed.
Doctor: "Of coarse. Just need to be sure that those casts are gonna do their job and you all can head home." As he spoke that, he did some quick tests that lasted a few minutes and that was it. "Sky, make sure you get plenty of rest and eat healthy with plenty of water. If anything happens, don't hesitate to come back here and we can get another check up done."
Rainbow: "Alright! Lets get outta here, champ! We'll have you back in junior training in no time!" Rainbow ruffled her son's mane, but then stopped when she heard a throat clearing noise from the doctor.
Doctor: "Training? Is it alright if I ask what kind of training?"
Rainbow: "Yeah! Junior training for the Wonderbolts! It's still kinda new, but Sky here is already gonna be top of his group for sure!" Rainbow smiled, but it faded when she saw the doctor's serious gaze as he looked over at Sky then at the papers on his clipboard. He spoke in a semi-serious tone. Most likely not to scare the poor young colt.
Doctor: "May I speak with you both for a moment, just out in the hall?" As he said so, he walked out and waited for Soarin and Rainbow to follow.
Soarin: "Uh, sure." Soarin and Rainbow gave each other confused looks, but walked out of the hospital room, making sure to close the door behind them.
Rainbow: "Uh…whats up, Doc? Any problems?"
Doctor: "Yes, well. I will have to highly recommend that you do not take Sky into this sort of 'training."
Rainbow: "What? Why not? You gotta kid or something in this group? Listen, Sky will be easy on the others so" She was cut off when the doctor continued to speak.but not like most can. If anything, his wings are fitted more for a glider — which isn't unheard of for a Wonderbolt…. Unfortunately, with Sky still developing and growing, having a possible fracture of his sternum and tearing of the pectoralis major muscle — he will be lucky to match the speed of a regular flyer."
Doctor: "This doesn't have to do with any other fillies or colts in this training group. It's for Sky's well being. Sky has a very…unique wing shape. One that isn't suited for the type of training Wonderbolts do, junior or not."
Soarin: "What are you talking about?"
Doctor: "If I may." Saying so, the doctor had motions for both parents to lift up one wing. Both did, still confused. "Both of you have very full, strong wings. To be a Wonderbolt, this is needed. Wings like yours can catch wind very easily and both of you have strong muscles to be able to control them." The doctor then sighed. "Sky's wings are….fairly spread out from each other. They can hold him up in the air and he can fly with them
Rainbow: "Pecto-alis…muscle…major- what?" Rainbow scrunched up her face, not understanding what in the world this pony was telling her.
The doctor sighed, a sympathetic look on his face.
Doctor: "Your son will not be able to go into this training, because he will not be a strong flyer. We've done what we could, but Sky will struggle with his wings."
Rainbow and Soarin were both silent, not knowing what to say. The doctor spoke, still sympathetic.
Doctor: "I am sorry, but I think he will take it better if you both tell him. Unless you'd like me to."
Soarin looked to Rainbow, who was still in shock.
Soarin: "No, we'll tell him. Thank you."
The doctor nodded and started to walk away. Suddenly, Rainbow Dash flared up her wings, about to chase the doctor, but Soarin lifted a wing up to stop her.
Rainbow: " I THOUGHT YOU WERE A DOCTOR! DON'T DOCTORS LIKE YOU FIX THIS STUFF!? WHY WOULD YOU"she had a fake smile on her face when she saw her concerned son looking at her.
Soarin cut her off, speaking lowly and in a sad voice.
Soarin: "Dash, keep your voice down….What if Sky hears?"
Rainbow stood silent, still furious. Then dropped her wings and turned her gaze to the ground. Soarin put the wing he had up to stop her from chasing the doctor, now around her to comfort his sad wife.
Soarin: "……We have to tell him….."
Rainbow: "…….No." Rainbow raised her head up, not looking at anything in particular. "We keep this to ourselves. Sky can get through this and he can become a great flyer, just like he wants. We don't tell him anything."
Soarin: "Dash…"
Rainbow had already opened the door, cutting the conversation off
Sky: "I-is everything alright? I heard yelling…"
Rainbow: "Course everything is alright! We just got excited hearing that you would make a quick recovery!" She lied, Soarin wasn't happy hearing that, but offered the same smile to his son when Sky looked over at him. Soarin didn't know what to say.
Sky: "Yeah! Cause I'm the son of Equestria's best flyer! Better be careful mom! Soon, Imma surpass you!" He gave a confident smile and raced out into the hospital hallway.
Rainbow: "Yeah…..you're gonna surpass me……" Rainbow's smile dropped, then she and Soarin left the hospital room.
