Silver Shill caught himself bobbing his head slightly to the beat. His boss’ music had been growing on him, though he still preferred something a little slower and with less lights and lasers. The roving spotlights passed over the crowd as colored lights circled from wall to wall, reflected by the disco ball on stage. Rising Star, Silver’s boss, switched to the last song of the night and Silver got ready to handle one last influx of visitors to his merch table. The spotlight passed over a familiar face and the roadie looked up.“Hello, Silver,” greeted a slender woman dressed in an outfit more suited for a business meeting than a concert.“Hello, Miss Pommel,” he replied. He noticed the binder under her arm. “Are those the set designs?”“Yes. I wanted to drop them off at Mr. Prop’s desk so that things can get going for the theater’s next event.”Silver nodded. Miss Pommel was the set designer for the theater that the concert was in. After he and the other roadies packed everything up, work would begin for another group that the owner had booked to use the space.“Are you going on with Rising Star’s tour?” she asked.“Nope, it’s the last stop. Once we take everything down, it all goes into storage until the next tour.”Her eyes widened a little. “Oh, so, will you be out of a job?”He shook his head. “No, I’ve got another job right here in Manehattan.”She seemed to light up a little. “So, you’ll be in town?”“Until the next tour. Mr. Lights…” he gestured to the stage, using his boss’ given name. “…is making me the head of merchandise for the next tour.”She smiled. “Congratulations.”“Thank you.”A moment of silence passed between them. Silver found himself feeling a pang of regret. He had enjoyed chatting with Coco whenever she came by for work with the theater, but now it looked like those chats would end. While they would still be in the same city, it was a very large city.“Miss” he started.“Where a” she started at the same time. They both chuckled.“You go first,” said Silver.“I was just wondering where you’ll be working next,” she asked.“Oh, I got a job at Clementine’s,” he replied, referring to a grocery store chain in town. “The one on elm street.”Though Silver didn’t notice, her shoulders seemed to relax. “I shop there all the time. Maybe I’ll see you.”“I’d like that,” he said. He hesitated, rubbing the back of his head. “They, uh, they’re adding a coffee shop up front. Maybe we could-”“I’d love to,” she interrupted, then caught herself and sheepishly twiddled with her binder. “Um, then maybe dinner and a movie?”“That sounds nice.”They both smiled at each other and she reached into her binder and pulled out a business card.“Here’s my number. Let me know when you’re free.”He took it and placed it in his pocket. “I will.”She took two steps away from his table, then turned. “Oh, and Silver?”“Yes?”“Call me Coco.”I was surprised by the interest in these two in the last poll. I thought there were only two or three of us that sailed this ship. Silver's new honest outlook lands him a job as a roadie with Neon Lights (aka Rising Star). He meets Coco and they get to know each other through working at the concert venue, him setting up equipment and her coming for meetings with the owner.
