If one were to look up a simple description of Rockhoof in the surviving history books of the ancients, it would mention his stout bravery and incredible strength of body and heart. His fists could move mountains, and his words could move nations. However, this earth pony had deceptively humble beginnings that betrayed his explosive entrance into the history books.

Rockhoof was once a scrawny pony in his youth working a simple job digging ditches, but the boy had aspirations to join the military and fight for the ponies he held dear. His frail physique only rewarded him a fit of laughter with every attempt to join any military effort. One day however, a local volcano erupted abruptly catching all the citizens at the foot off guard and in harm's way. There wasn’t enough time for the soldiers to evacuate everyone, and it looked like the town was done for. However, thinking quickly, Rockhoof dug trench after trenc hat a breakneck pace to catch as much magma as he could. His combat prowess may have been questionable, but no one was better at working a shovel. Rockhoof’s efforts saved not only the remaining citizens, but the entire village. For both his courage and show of endurance, he was gladly invited to the military, an investment that would pay dividends.

As he grew older, his muscles and true strength began to show. By the end of the second year, he was already twice his old weight with most of it being his muscles. However, he stubbornly continued using only the shovel that he brought with him, adapting it as a pole used for combat. In doing so, he would be remembered as the first true monk. He himself probably wouldn’t refer to himself that way, but the Earth Pony’s use of pole and bare handed strength would be second to none in his time.

Late in his career, Rockhoof was approached by a group looking to end the reign of terror led by a group of Sirens looking to conquer the lands with their mind controlling voices. The group would defeat them, and start their journey as a unit that would eventually call them the Warriors of Dawn in history books detailing their triumphs. Their adventuring would be cut short in their prime to save the world, but it was not truly the end of their story.

IN the modern era after being awoken, Rockhoof would struggle to find a place in the world. There was conflict in this current time, so there would always be a need for a hardened warrior like him. However, time and progress had gone ahead without the earth pony, and he felt some level of dissociation with this new world around him in spite of his allies finding new ways of life.

It took some convincing, but while all his allies had carved out a life that rooted them to a town or city, Rockhoof realized that his recollection of the past served not only as a walking firsthand history book. He could also spread the folktales and tall tales of his time to others. This would require him to journey around the lands, but this was nothing new to him from his travels. This was also the perfect chance to continue honing his combat abilities and adapt to the new techniques that have emerged in his absence. The Monk already knew this would be a treat after sparring with the successor to his element of Strength, now Honesty, and now Warrior of Light, Applejack

Shovel — The Monk’s Flat, Trenchmaster, and Earthcleave are among a few of the names that historians deduced what Rockhoof had named his iconic weapon. When he ran into those ponies, after being introduced by Twilight, the monk made sure to clarify the misunderstanding. It was effectively a standard shovel of his time. By some mix up, he was not given one when starting his digging position, but was still expected to dig. He made his well known tool himself based on the specification of the shovels they had. The only difference is the wood due to availability. This revelation sent many of those historians to re-evaluate their findings (after swallowing their tears learning how off base they were)

Plate — A simple steel plate that protects the chest. It served as armor that was standard among the cloth wearing soldiers. The armor protects very little on his large self, but Rockhoof refuses to remove or replace it out of his stubborn nature
