Sonata Dusk by StarryOak
NOTE: Please don't flood the comments with 'this is how she should have looked', because I have an important announcement; I don't want to talk about what's been done wrong by your standards and I don't care. I'm really sorry to say that I just don't want to discuss things like that. So, would you kindly keep those to yourself?
Sonata is the middle of the three Sirens in size, and her design is rooted mainly in Unicorn definitions of beauty; not large, but curvy, also rooted in our beauty standards, because of how hideously overrated she is, I figured it would fit.
Sonata's colors are the least based in her designs, mostly relying on variations of her skin and hair for her body, it's not worth talking about for long. Her fins colors are the colors of her jacket, so out of the three, she has the least color work put into her. Her gem center is the color of her Cutie Mark's note, and the filling is the outer heart of her Cutie Mark. Her antennae stick straight up in reference to anime tendencies towards the intelligence of characters with hair sticking up, her makeup is curled and her pupils are small and her iris is large, giving her a manic look. This ties into her secondary design choices; herteeth are the largest, her spikes are sharper than the others, and her hooves are much longer and sharper than her fellow sirens, as well as having two splitted 'thumbs' to give her a more dangerous bend.
Sonata is the Id of the group, unintelligent and impulse driven, almost always hungry and with very little attention span for anything. She's about as intelligent as a rock, but she loves to try to be as intimidating as the others. Unfortunately, while physically imposing, and possessing crazy eyes… her lack of skill at coming up with threatening remarks leaves her appearing much less impressive than Aria or Adagio. Generally, she is the dead weight of the trio, the only reason she's kept around is the need for each other to sing in harmony to harvest magic, and generally hinders most of their actions as a whole. As such, they've pretty much given up on actively planning anything with her, what with her goldfish level attention span and all.
Personally…. I know I'm going to piss people off, but… I kind of hate Sonata… well, it's not exactly HER on her own that I hate. I don't mind her presence in the movie, she gives good lines for the other Sirens, but the treatment of Sonata by the general fandom has soured me on her as a character. Let's just keep it clear here, it's not her I hate, it's the mindset that some people have about her; The whole ‘she’s less evil than the rest of them’ thing is 'Draco in Leather Pants'ing her so much that it's ruining her for me.
She is just as bad as the others. At no point does she ever show any remorse or object to the things the Dazzlings did. At no point did she seem uncomfortable with doing terrible things. There was no evidence that she had any sort of problem with what she was doing; she is just as evil as Aria and Adagio are.
Yes, she is dumber than they are. Yes, she is ditzy. She is cheerful and completely moronic. But she is also an evil siren who tried to rule Equestria with Adagio and Aria. She is a monster that’s at least a thousand years old, and has been spending every second of that spreading misery and hatred in the EQG world. She is a monstrous beast the size of a bus that is trying to take over the entire world.
I don’t understand how people can honestly say that she isn’t evil, or that she was forced into it. There is no evidence for that. Just because she’s cute and dumb doesn’t mean she isn’t evil. Cute and evil aren’t mutually exclusive. If Sonata is deserving of redemption, the rest of them are too. I wouldn’t have as much of a problem with Sonata being redeemed if it wasn’t also saying that Aria and Adagio shouldn’t be.
Personally, I find Adagio much more interesting anyway.
Note; I do not hate Sonata, I simply don't like the double standard that the fandom has produced with her, similar to Silver Spoon.
