-Keep a trim profile; the last thing you want is your uniform getting stuck in the underbrush when a manticore has his sights on your flank.

-If you're going to be out there a long time, you might as well take everything. You never know what you might need in those long hours.

-Never forget the importance of some good, thick-soled boots. Those fancy, schmancy guards in Canterlot don't have to deal with trudging through the mud for 10 miles.
