Due to their strong bond with nature dragons don't die, or at least not like the other creatures in Equestria. When their time comes, they simply fall asllep and their body become one with the elements. They are technically still alive but will never wake up again although it is possible under special circumstances for them to briefly regain consciousness before falling back into their eternal sleep.
