Background/Personality:

Prince Somnium is the first child and only son of Princess Luna. The story of his conception goes that after watching her sister birth Princess Serena, Princess Luna dreamed of her on child, and the princess's desire was so strong that an alicorn colt appeared in the dream realm, beckoning for the moon princess to raise her now son. In reality, no one except Princess Luna herself knows if the story is true or not, so ponies merely accept this story and the resulting prince. Prince Somnium learned of his royal duties from Starswirl who was already tutoring Princess Serena, and although Princess Luna taught her son on royal duties, she predominantly educated the colt on the dream realm. During the days, Prince Somnium learned etiquette and politics, and during the nights he aided his mother in keeping the dream realm serene. These busy days and nights caused the prince to suffer from sleep deprivation and insomnia that affected him well into his adult years. Despite his tiredness, Prince Somnium found comfort in roaming the dream realm. When he entered his teenage years, Prince Somnium gained his cutie mark, one that mirrored his mother's own mark. Once his sister Princess Aurora was born, the moon prince took over his mother's duties in the dream realm, protecting ponies from nightmares and using spells to create soothing dreams, which he continues to do today.

Just like his mother, Prince Somnium is slightly mysterious in his actions and thoughts: although he does show emotion, the prince is not expressive. Prince Somnium also seems cold to most ponies with his quiet and more observant nature. The moon prince does not really open up to most ponies, in part due to royal etiquette; however, the prince seems to melt away when interacting with children since he enjoys their creative dreams.

Relationships:

Prince Somnium is the apple of his mother's eye: he is some instances her clone since she dreamed his creation. Prince Somnium is most at ease when he and his mother are exploring the dream realm, both helping ponies face their nightmares. Somnium also adores his little sister, although he can find her shrieks a bit shrilling, especially when he is trying to sleep which is a rare occurrence

Somnium is close enough to his Aunt Celestia and cousin Princess Serena, whom he see more like an older sister than a cousin. With them both being royal heirs, the two spent many lessons together, with Serena helping the poor prince stay awake during their lessons.

Unlike Princess Serena, Prince Somnium does not see his fellow royal heirs as familial, but rather as co-workers. This is not to say that he does not enjoy their company: there is even a rumor (started by Princess Flurry Heart) that the prince finds Princess Dawn Dreamer attractive, and has tried countless times to woo her.


Special:
- Prince Somnium's cutie mark is a crescent moon with three twinkling stars against darkness. The mark, almost mirroring his mother's own mark, symbolizes Somnium's talent in astral abilities mirroring his mother's.
- Prince Somnium is a hugely successful flirt: between his bewitching eyes, his smooth voice, his choice of words, and his ability to deeply understand a pony, Prince Somnium is certainly a desirable bachelor.
- The prince's main takes on magical properties just like his mother and aunt's manes: Somnium's mane seems to swirl hypnotically, as if in a purple haze.
- The moon prince is an insomniac, often not sleeping for a few days in a row. Princess Luna blames herself for this health issue, although the prince claims otherwise.
- Being the first known born male alicorn, Starswirl insisted to Princess Luna that she give the prince extra guards for his protection. Prince Somnium at first did not like the extra attention due to his uniqueness; however as
he grew older, the stallion realized that it could very well work in his favor with the guys and gals.
- Somnium is bisexual and somewhat loose. He also very much enjoys the bat pony "herd" way of life, and may someday create his own "herd" when he is older.
