The secondborn child of Trixie Lulamoon and Princess Luna, but the last of the four 'natural alicorns' to be born (after Princesses Flurry Heart, Gold Lily, and Skyla), Princess Sterling's alicornhood didn't necessarily come as a surprise to her parents, although they had hoped they'd have another easily-cared-for child like Sterling's older sister Star Swirl. Much to her parents' chagrin, Sterling was never very interested in magic in any capacity — not magic tricks or sleight of hoof, and not magically connecting with the night sky. Instead, she seemed to admire the dedication and work ethic of her mother Trixie's close friend Maud, and as she grew older she demonstrated her own interest in the study of rocks — but gemstones specifically, along with the magic that could be channeled through them. Although the relation to magic gave her parents hope that perhaps they'd have common ground to connect with their daughter on at last, this was not exactly the case, as Sterling has remained as distant and aloof as ever throughout her young adulthood. Her parents love her, of course, but their relationship is … in a word … strained.
