Tirek and his brother, Scorpan, came from a distant land intent on stealing Equestrian magic. But Scorpan came to appreciate the pony culture before he befriended a unicorn wizard. Scorpan urged his brother to abandon their plans, when Tirek refused, Scorpan informed the Two Sisters of his brother's threat. When Tirek was defeated, Scorpan returned to his homeland and was never seen again while his older brother was sent into Tartarus to pay for his crimes.

Scorpan: My brother says that I should call him "master" from now on because he wants me to serve him and to help him steal the magic from every pony in Equestria.

Starswirl: It seems that your long-lost brother isn't as close as he use to, is that right?

Scorpan: Yes. The last time I saw him, Tirek ran away from home because he couldn't stand our parents favoring me over him. When he came back by the time I was going to inherit the throne and be the next king, I hardly recognized him. He was so big and strong and he was made with power!

Starswirl: Scorpan? Let me tell you a story. Now, your brother kinda reminds me of someone I grew up with, back when I was just a young apprentice to my master, Avalor the Wise. I had a friend who studied magic with me and he treated me like I was his twin brother. His name was Grogar and we were great and powerful wizards until one fateful day, he turned to evil, declared war on ponykind and began to use his dark powers to control the dying and the dead.

Scorpan: And then what happened?

Starswirl: I asked my old friend why he was doing all of those horrible things and he told me that his evil was motivated by the loss of his parents and the ponies who killed them back when he was a young lamb. I tried to stop him, but Grogar would not listen to reason. When we had our first fight with each other, I exposed his evil doings in front of everybody until I banished him into exile. I lost my friend because he was blinded by hatred and he became a deluded Necromancer, thirsty for war and bloodshed and vengeance.
