The CMC are cheeky little fillies!
They told Rarity, Applejack and Pinkie that the path to the main caves were near the creak, but soon they were coated in mud.
Rainbow Dash found that the actual path was by the entrance; there's a trail.
Feeling quite embarrassed that they fell for the filly's joke, they followed the trail to the main caves.
