Twilight (the Second) is a Princess on the royal court of the Celestial Kingdom. She was born to Twilight Velvet the First, which is the leader of a great and proud unicorn house, together with her Lord husband Night Light. Her brother Shining Armor is the rightful heir to their keep (due to him being the firstborn) and got to marry Cadence, a beauty from the north. Before her parents were able to wed Twilight to a rich Prince or Lord, Celestia found out about her astonishing magical abilities during a tourney. The tourneys in Equestria include magical sports for very skilled unicorns. Since then she's been living in the grand, shiny, white castle of the great Sun-Queen herself, bathing in her acknowledgement. The Queen had declared her a princess after she successfully protected the kingdom thrice from foreign threats, using her magic and her brain only. Celestia also declared Twilight to her successor, because she's infertile and thus not able to make children of her own heirs to the throne, but Twilight is like a daughter to her.
Rainbow Dash on the other hand has been a simple squire for a long time. Her house isn't that big or proud, so she was sent away to become a squire for some knight. What she didn't know back then, was how much she was going to learn from the person she was going to serve. The knight became her biggest hero, and when the Queen finally knighted her, she knew exactly what she wanted: to become an honorable, loyal knight to the kingdom, always daring and never afraid to wield her sword. That's why Rainbow immediately joined the "Celestial Flight Guard", a special royal force protecting the Queen, which only accepts the swiftest pegasi-knights.
So far on their quick personal backgrounds…
Princess Twilight went back and forth with the Queen about whom she should marry, the kingdom needed a bigger royal family and new heirs after Twilight. The decision had almost been made, when Twilight suddenly finds herself blushing over a … knight? A thin, young knight, that has scarcely entered adulthood, with a wild temper and not a scar on her fur from fighting. Ser Rainbow was ordered to stand sentry in front of her tower when the Princess was inside, and it didn't take long for Twilight to notice the flustered looks the guard gave her every time she entered or left her room.
One day Princess Twilight simply asked Ser Rainbow to follow her to her chambers. Completely baffled over this, the young knight did as she was told. Though she felt quite insecure about letting down her guard on the tower.
Inside, Ser Rainbow is still confused.
"If I, uhm, I don't mean to…" ,the knight swallowed her fear, "Your grace, may I help you with something?"
To Rainbow's surprise, the Princess snickered.
"What is your name, Ser?", she asked. A very simple question. "Muh-my name? Ser Rainbow Dash, your highness."
"That's a nice name. You know, I haven't always been a princess? I know what it's like to live outside the castle. I'm basically like you."
Twilight approached, taking one of Rainbow's hands. "Don't be afraid…"
Rainbow felt her heart pounding, but she didn't know if she was afraid or excited. "I'm not, your highness. And I, uh, yes I heard about your house and how you came
here…you're still a princess and I am below you." The Princess sighed, let go of her hand and turned around. She went to a small table and poured herself a glass of
red wine. "Would you like one as well?", she asked. Rainbow knew the wine would make her more calm, but she couldn't afford this right now. All of this. She was
supposed to stand sentry right now, what was she doing here?
"Your grace, may I return to my duties?" — "You may not.", Twilight immediately answered. "I saw the looks you gave me, Ser Rainbow. I just wanted some
company, that's all. It gets awfully lonely here. The Queen is very busy and I have found no pleasure in spending my time with court ladies or lords." She turned
around and gave Rainbow a glass of wine, even though she hadn't said yes yet. 'Might as well…', she thought and took a long sip. The wine felt warm inside her.
"Well then. It's quite late. Hungry? I bet, I mean you have to guard my tower for hours…" Princess Twilight gave her a sign to seat herself.
The wine had already calmed Rainbow's nerves, and she was starving. Besides, who was she to disagree with a princess?
Twilight called a servant and gave him some orders. Quickly afterwards the dinner was served. They had both finished two glasses of wine until then.
"Wow.", Rainbow wasn't able to hold back her astonishment. The cheese, the crispy lamb with a nice garlic sauce, the fresh salad and the mushrooms filled with
things she didn't even know by name, all of that made her even hungrier. Twilight laughed and threw back her head. Now that her fear was gone, Rainbow actually
started appreciating this. How beautiful the princess looked. She caught herself admiring her a little too long, and quickly looked away.
The princess had noticed, though, and smiled. "Let us enjoy this evening, Ser. You and me." She filled their glasses again and Rainbow smiled as well, for the first
time. "Yes, your grace."
"Call me Twilight."
After this eventful evening and one or two too many glasses of wine, Rainbow found herself waking up on the softest silk and the fluffiest wool she had ever felt.
But there was more. There was someone lying next to her, very close.
Very close.
And there was nothing but a blanket between them.
'What will my parents think? What the Queen think? What will Twilight think when she wakes up?' All these thoughts went through the young knights head.
'Does it matter?'
