- Poppy is the first born of Doctor Whooves and Derpy Hooves. She is one of three daughters. Named after her unique markings, Derpy thought she resembled a lemon poppy muffin.
- When Poppy was a filly, she was often teased for being Derpy's daughter. She'd hear foals talking and laughing about her mother's eyes behind her back, which caused Poppy to lash out often. One day, an older colt decided to say something about it, but this time when Poppy confronted him about it, Poppy was knocked out of the sky by a rock the colt threw and caused her to crash headfirst into the ground. The impact and damage to her head resulted in a permanent eye condition known as "anisocoria"; uneven sized pupils. As she grew up, she was the one getting teased now about her different sized pupils; turning Poppy into a self-conscious, shy mare as she grew up. But Derpy taught her that its ok to be different; and after Skipper was born, Poppy was able to look past her anisocoria self-consciousness to protect her little sister from being teased for her being colorblind instead.
("Anisocoria"; an eye disorder that leaves one pupil smaller or larger than the other — In her case, Poppy's right eye pupil is naturally smaller and permanently constricted whereas the left pupil dialates and constricts as normal pupils do. — David Bowie had this disorder; for example.)
- After growing up and becoming more confident, Poppy began blogging about her past and came out about her bullying, in hopes to help inspire the next generation of ponies who are different to feel good about themselves. Her blog shot up like wild fire, and eventually she was the most talked about blogger on the PonyWeb. After interviews, and being invited to speak on talkshows, Poppy decided to further her career and become a reporter for the news. She continued blogging for her followers and her passion of helping other ponies, but she also loved reporting on issues and current events around Ponyville. When her first article was published, Derpy framed it.
