The Man That I Used To Be — YouTube

_~I've seen a thousand wonders
I've lived a hundred lifetimes
But not until this moment
Have miracles seemed real_

_As fleeting as a shadow
The time goes by unnoticed
The hate that drove me forward
Is gone and I am face to face with…_

_The man I used to be
Dreams I dared to dream
When love was all
The innocence of youth
Like memories of truth return
To learn forgiveness_

_The man I used to be
Cannot be outrun Albert still lives
Whatever else I've done
Forever in his eyes, he'll see
The man that I used to be_

_And all the years will melt away
And lights will fall much softer now_

_For all the pain is gone
Hope is what moves on
I will be there
As near as her next prayer
As merciful as sweet redemption_

_Once blind, now I see
Once a slave and free
Give me a star
To home would guide my heart
To resurrect a part of me
The man who I used to be!~_

Based on the animatic short series designed by Assassin-or-Shadow aka Inkpotts on Youtube

I don't know why, but this musical has effected me on an emotional level that I haven't felt in a while. Maybe it was because I was exposed to Inkpott's animatic series beforehand, before I ended up watching some of the movies today — including the 2002 version i saw in school. Could also be because I indeed have a soft spot for ponies. And seeing r63 Dash go through all that Edmond Dante's did was heartbreaking. Both the animation, and the song was so emotionally heart-wrenching, it made me want to avoid anything related until today. Now, let's just say, i've got a newfound interest, and don't find it as depressing as I recall it being.

Now because i was in a Monte' Cristo' mood, I decided to draw something based on another emotionally strong song called "The man I used to be". Kind of self explanatory, but essentially, it's at a point in the story where Mercedes has finally learned his identity, though she guessed the minute she saw the count. And she's helped begin to heal his heart from the anger, hatred, agony, and pain he's been enslaved to for the last 13-15 years. And in this case, I made my man Shining Armor The Count, Edmond Dante's, himself. Why? Because I love Shining Armor like I love no other ponies. He's very special and dear to me. And I wanted to place him in a tribute for such a tragic, yet amazing story.

Now that I think about it……..i'm almost glad Inkpotts didn't cast HIM as Edmond Dante's: it hurts me when I see my most beloved characters getting hurt like that. And I don't think I could've handled seeing Shining Armor so broken, and wounded inside. Even my stone heart would have cracked from the sorrow. But this song has a most hopeful sound to it. It give you this sense of longing that you know Edmond feels: you WANT him to let go of his hate. You WANT him to move on, and truly reunite with Mercede's. And you truly WANT him to allow his old self to be the center of his being again. At least that's how I feel every time I hear this song.

This is based on "The Count of Monte Rainbow" created by Assassin-or-Shadow
