I have been wanting to work on their relationship for over a year and now that I’ve done some art on it I feel so complete on the inside like you have no idea.
1. Since Champ and Sonata are not only close in age, with Sonata being older by a year, but they are also the oldest two of the KOP gang. As a result, whenever Rarity would travel to Ponyville for a visit, Sonata would spend most of her time hanging out with Champ. They did a lot of stuff together, like window shopping trips, listening to some of their favorite bands, and catching up together on the playground. But the thing they loved to do most was competing. From chocolate milkshake races, to checker games, to a round of good ole’ hoofball- if they could turn into a competition, they would make it one.
Sonata and Champ had their fair share of winnings and both usually took losing pretty well. However, when it came to sports or games that Champ excelled in, he found losing a lot harder to swallow. Often, he’d give up after being defeated once or twice and no matter how patient Sonata was towards him, she couldn’t stand it when he acted all sulky and sour. It took Champ some time to learn what a real Champion was.
2.Sonata doesn’t fuss over a harmless prank or two, mostly because she knows Champ would never listen to her lectures, but she does have a line. And when that line is crossed…ho boy.
To be honest, even though it may seem to Sonata that her words of wisdom fall on deaf ears, she has helped him more than she knows. For instance, there was many a time that the thought of a raging, flame engulfed Sonata would occur to Champ, keeping him from getting to riskier mischief. Some pranks just aren’t worth it.
3. Champ isn’t just a pretty face spouting hot air all the time, you know. Occasionally, Champ will go out of his way to show his affection for Sonata. Even if that means spending all his carnival money on a ballon popping booth, only to lose and have the pony running it give him the stuffed toy out of pity. Minor details. The important thing is that he did get her the toy in the end.
4. If Sonata isn’t lecturing on and on about Champ’s shenanigans, she’ll usually just shake her head and scoff at his less dangerous, silly anitics. However, once in a while Sonata finds Champ’s immature behavior to be a little bit amusing and will bring out her camera to capture the moment so as to look back on it and laugh for years to come. Sonata may or may not use some of them for black mail.
Champ and Sonata are both between the ages of 10-12 and 16-18 here.
