Twilight Sparkle once started out as a reclusive young unicorn with her nose constantly stuck in books and having no friends until one day she learned that friendship is magic and managed to defeat a powerful foe with the help of five ponies she had just met. From then on, she devoted herself to learning more and more about friendship till she grew wings and became an alicorn princess. Princess Twilight now resides in a crystal castle in Ponyville where she runs the School of Friendship, passing on her wisdom to her students. She spends her days doing her royal duties and acting as the headmaster of the school with help from her #1 assistant, Spike the Dragon.

Her niece, Flurry Heart has been sent to spend time with Twilight and Spike in Ponyville recently to learn about friendship for she too seems to be lacking in social skills.
