While Nightmare Night is a widely celebrated holiday in Equestria, some places are less enthusiastic about it than others. One such town is the city of Canterlot. these high-society ponies barely celebrate the occasion at all, and if they do, it's via fancy gala's and the occasional parade celebrating Celestia's victory and reign. Something as ‘crude’ as tricker treating is unheard of in the polished streets of Canterlot. Which made for an interesting Nightmare Night experience for Sonata Growing up.
Rarity, who was used to the costumes, candy bags, and door-to-door rituals, was disappointed when she couldn't enjoy those activities with her own daughter. However, Rarity was not who easily accepted defeat and being the creative mare she is, she came up with fun, exciting ways for her small family to celebrate the holiday. Thus, new Nightmare Night traditions were born.
Every year they did the same thing. Rarity and Sonata would spend days working together on the costume(s) of Sonny's choice- which was their rare mother-daughter project for the year. The day of Nightmare Night, Rarity would set up elaborate scenes and props for the theme of her costume and for hours the two would take photos, put on an improv show, and goofing around the whole time. Once dinner time came, they would join Joe in the kitchen and together they would bake special spooky treats just for them. Then, to finish the night, they'd chow down on their baked goods as they watched old films. Most of them were cheesy thrillers and ghost stories with happy endings. Once Sonata eventually crashed, then the true horror films came out.
Even when Sonata moved to Ponyville and got a taste of what a real Nightmare night celebration was like, she continued to get home just in time to watch 'grown up' movies with her parent's over fresh doughnuts.
