Ask Movie Slate — Episode 214 — Run Silent, Run Deep

Commissioned by :iconfernindt:

This one was a surprise to work on, mostly because I wasn't expecting there to be that many details in that stupid background. If you want to take a better look at it, please check the making of post on my Tumblr blog that's linked at the bottom of the picture description. The real fun of this picture came from drawing Fancy Pants as Clark Gable, all the way down to his sea foam pipe and his perfect waxed moustache. I don't draw him all that often, I'm afraid. He's a fun guy to draw. My affinity to draw and work in greyscale is palpable in this picture. Does it show I have been craving for some black and white pieces lately? Because I really been and this was a breath of fresh air. Also it was fun to make such a busy background not eat the characters out. I had to give them a rather intense glow, but I think it works out fine in the end.

I don't think I've ever had the chance to review a movie directed by Robert Wise. He's the man who directed movies such as "West Side Story", "The Andromeda Strain", "The Sound of Music", "The Haunting", "Sand Pebbles", and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". So I was happily surprised when I saw that "Run Silent Run Deep" was also directed by him and it had all the staples that I love of his cinema. Fantastic rhythm, really tight editing, inventive camera work, relateable characters, a straight forward story, and all the scenes work towards moving the plot forward and developing the characters in a seamless way. This might be one of the best war movies I've ever seen in a while, and I was really glad it was brought to my attention. Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster have perfect chemistry and work of each other really well. What's interesting about this movie is that it feels modern in its structure, in the way it's shot and in the way it works. If it wasn't for the special effects and the actors I could've said this movie was made in the past ten years. It's also a rather atypical war movie, and very much like this year's "Dunkirk", "Run Silent Run Deep" manages to show that war is horrifying without going over the top or violent.

"Run Silent Run Deep" might as well be the war movie in the sub-genre of submarine movie that prepared the ground for all the other good submarine movies that came after. It still stands the test of time thanks to the forward vision of its director, the tightness of the script, the precision of its editing, and the solid performances of its actors.

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
