Ask Movie Slate — Episode 217 — Captain Underpants, The First Epic Movie

Today's Movie Slate is brought to you thanks to :iconglitch-sketch: featuring :iconchaoscroc:

This one has been quite a while in the making. You may notice the jump between episode numbers, and you're going to see a few more like this. It's the disadvantage of drawing them out of order. I was also quite intimidated by this picture in particular, especially because I knew next to nothing about Captain Underpants. I didn't even saw the movie when I got the idea brought to me by Glitch. You could say this was a time I sat down and watched a movie for work only. In the end I think the concept came out rather alright, with Movie's hallucination melding with her projection booth, as she now believes herself to be Captain Underpants. Also, no, she won't be dressed like that in every update from now on. Only for any other future Captain Underpants movie.

So, "Captain Underpants, The First Epic Movie". I missed my chanced to watch it in the movies, and had to wait until it was released on streaming for me to give it a go. I kept putting it back over and over again, as the concept really didn't call to me. It seemed way too silly, and didn't seem to have anything to sell me on the concept. It felt like a comic that went past by me and I had no connection to, so watching it and then talking about it would've been making a disservice to the source material. But then I watched my friend's Mad—Munchkin 's review of the movie, and the moment she mentioned the toilet humour I was sold. I like lowbrow comedy, and toilet humour is perhaps my absolute favourite. I really like that kind of comedy (it's one of the reasons why I'm still a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd). So I gave it a go sold on that premise, and I have to say this was a surprise. The characters were surprisingly likeable, especially Mr. Krupp (the guy who gets turned into Captain Underpants). From what I've been told the original comic portrays him as meaner, but in this movie he's just a broken down lonely man who just wants to find someone to love to and who will love him back. He's still an asshole but you know where he comes from and what he's dealing with. And the two kids George and Harold are also very likeable and relateable. Even the main antagonist has some levels of sympathy towards him.

It's not a perfect movie though. I'd say the action is a bit lacklustre (although you can argue that's not the point of the movie), not all of the jokes land and there is a bit of a halt in the pacing towards the third act that kind of ruins the (up to this point) spotless rhythm. But none of these are issues that hamper the movie from being a wild ride that has a lot of heart and soul under it's delightful crust of well played comedy and visual gags.

"Captain Underpants, The First Epic Movie" achieves a rare feat in creating a story that can bring those unfamiliar with the original comic into a wild ride full of imagination, good comedy, and surprisingly good characters. While not perfect the flaws don't prevent it from being a great experience from beginning to end. Give it a watch if you have the chance!

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
