Ask Movie Slate — Halloween 2018 — "Corman Month".

Commissioned by :iconssjcharon:

I have a big amount of appreciation and admiration for Roger Corman. I wouldn't consider his movies to be cinematic masterpieces or anything, but when it came to squeezing a budget he was the best. "Instead of making a $50mill. movie, lets make fifty $1mill. movies and if any of those is a hit then we will make up for the expense!". I'm not sure who coined this phrase but I've always associated it with Corman's mentality when it came to making movies. If we have a modern day equivalent I'd say that's Jason Blum and his production company "Blumhouse". Low budget movies, mostly horror, small investments and big rewards.

This comic strip was interesting to work on, and that's something I will be saying a lot during the entire month of October. It felt weird to have limited means when it came to creating backgrounds and drawing characters. In the end, and this is something I will also say a lot, I ended up over doing it so the result is more polished than I first intended. Still, I hope you guys find it amusing how Movie and Jamesy get interrupted by a rather over-excited Chelicera.

As for a discussion piece for the comments, what do you think about the modern budget of movies? Are movies getting more and more expensive and risking more to be financial flops regardless of overall quality? And what about those sleeper hits that cost $30mill. or $20mill. and then make ten or twenty times their original budget?

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

Thank you!
