Ask Movie Slate — Corman Month — Death Race 2000
Today's Movie Slate is brought to you thanks to :iconssjcharon:
The most fun about this drawing was actually the research I was doing before working on it. I got to draw a bunch of car designs and from there pick the one that looked the best for what we were going for. It seemed like I had more Mad Max Fury Road in mind than Death Race 2000, but that only means I'll have plenty of cars to choose from when it comes to reviewing that movie. You can see some of those designs on the link to the Making Of post at the bottom. Also trying to figure out the camera angle and setting for the picture as well, to give it a feel of motion without breaking the usual standard format for Movie Slate.
I think it came out alright.
"Death Race 2000" is one of those movies that you watch once, and then you don't need to watch again in order to remember it. I first watched it back in 2012, and I still remember pretty much all of it. It's a ridiculous action movie with cartoon sound effects, nonsensical car designs, a literally hand-grenade, and a rather confused but still enjoyable Silvester Stallone. You may have noticed I haven't said if I think the movie is good or not, and that's because I don't know the answer to that question. I honestly have no idea what to make of it. It's clearly a satire, there's some political and social commentary here and there, but in the end one should judge the movie on what's the focus of it, the action. And action wise is quite underwhelming. "Robocop" for example had a ton of commentary and clever subtext added to it, but it was wrapped up as a very good, tight and cerebral action movie with tons of great set pieces. "Death Race 2000" keeps these aspects separated, and because of that it suffers the most. But there's good and creative stuff in it so it's not entirely a waste, I think.
"Death Race 2000" has some charm and imagination going for it, as well as introducing us to a very young and promising Silvester Stallone, but in trying to juggle so many different things and themes at once it comes across as goofy even when it isn't supposed to be. Still, it's good to burn out an hour and a half if you're up for it.
Movie Slate's car makes no sense whatsoever, especially when you see how the wheels are movie reels and they are feeding film to the cameras installed on the front of the car. Also she's got a giant pair of scissors sticking out of the front, like, how is she supposed to operate said scissors? No idea. This car is an example of rule of cool. It doesn't need to make sense, it just has to be cool to look at.
I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
