Ask Movie Slate — Corman Month — Galaxy of Terror

Today's Movie Slate is brought to you thanks to :iconssjcharon:

Drawing this one was a ton of fun, let me tell ya. This goes to anyone drawing any sort of science fiction setting. If you want a quick background just draw a bunch of rocks and then add a little detail like the piece of a space ship or a futuristic city in the background. It works every time. I also did something with this one that I very rarely do, which is using the sketch for the finished piece instead of doing the lineart and then colouring it. That means I spent a lot of time drawing all those warts on the sketch phase, then coloured and shaded them making them pop up with the fire effects. In the end I think the results paid off. Also, when you have a giant, fat, disgusting alien worm with raping tendencies, you need to make a reference to Harvey Weinstein. You knew it was a matter of time before I threw a jab at that sleazy butter ball.

So "Galaxy of Terror", AKA that one movie where that scientist gets fucked to death by a giant alien worm. There is no way around it! It's literally the only thing people remember of this movie, and for better or for worse it makes the movie oddly memorable. But that's about it. I'll actually go as far as saying that this movie is very annoying and quite filled with non-sense. Which wouldn't bother me so much if this movie was cheaper looking. "Galaxy of Terror" is one of the best looking low budget sci-fi movies I've ever seen. The effects look really good, and many of them have aged quite well. The deaths are very over the top, and they range from cartoony to downright brutal. The production design is borderline spotless, maybe because James Cameron was behind it! And the acting is pretty alright, especially from a very young Robert Englund.

But the story. Oh my God. So a group of…space explorers? Scientists? A group of people is sent on a rescue mission to a planet where an alien pyramid turns their fears into reality, and they are forced to face them. But then one of the guys reveals himself to be their leader, and how the pyramid happens to be where the next leader is chosen, which is this other guy with little to no personality other than being the one who survives, and…yeah no, I give up. I gave up around the time things turn metaphysical and lasers were coming out of the guy's stomach. Nonsense, complete and utter nonsense.

"Galaxy of Terror" is one of those movies that lives in infamy for featuring one of the most memorable and incredibly cringe inducing scenes ever filmed, which clouds it's many other failures and issues that keep it from being even merely entertaining. There is bad bad, so bad is good, so dumb is good, or so bad it's insulting. This one is borderline "so bad it's insulting", and not for lack of trying. If I were you, I'd check out "Space Raiders" or "Battle Beyond the Sun", being more interesting and fun science fiction movies with the Roger Corman seal of approval.

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
